One in Four offers support for people who have experienced sexual abuse and sexual violence. Research has consistently shown that 1 in 4 children will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18. Our research comes from a study carried out by Dr Liz Kelly, Linda Regan and Sheila Burton at the Child Abuse Study Unit, University of North London, 1991.

🌈 Join us in celebrating Pride Month this June 2026! 🌈

šŸ’” Among the Pride celebrations, we want to shine a light on inclusive support services and removing barriers to access for LGBTQ+ survivors of sexual violence and abuse.

LGBTQ+ people are too often excluded from discussions around sexual violence. Yet over half of LGBTQ+ survivors surveyed by Galop () in 2022 believe their LGBTQ+ identity was linked to, or the reason for, at least one instance of sexual violence they were subjected to.

At One in Four, we support survivors of child sexual abuse and violence regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

You are not alone. Support is available.

One in Four provides long term counselling to support you on your journey.

At One in Four we know that steady, ongoing therapy can make a real difference, especially when the issues are complex and rooted in childhood harm. Our two-year therapy offer is not about quick fixes. It’s about time: time to build trust, to notice patterns, and to practise new ways of being in safe, supported steps.

Across months and years, people often find that small shifts add up. Having the same therapeutic relationship over time means we can explore difficult memories at a pace that feels manageable, pay attention to how emotions show up in the body, and try out practical strategies that help day-to-day life. It also gives space to untangle identity, culture and relationship patterns without pressure.

We work with curiosity and respect, adapting sessions to each person’s way of being. Our therapists receive specialist training and regular supervision so they can hold that continuity safely and ethically. Many clients say the steadiness of longer-term work helps them feel less alone with their past and more able to make choices in the present.

If you’d like to read more about how our approach works in practice, please visit our website for details about the programme and how it’s organised.

Childhood abuse can inflict profound and enduring psychological wounds, shaping an individual's emotional landscape throughout their life. The impact of such traumatic experiences can manifest in various ways, often affecting one's mental health, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. Children who endure abuse may develop a range of psychological challenges, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) without necessarily understanding the reason for feeling this way.

The betrayal of trust inherent in abuse can disrupt the normal course of emotional development, leaving survivors struggling with a distorted sense of self and difficulties in forming healthy attachments.

The impact can extend into adulthood, influencing coping mechanisms and contributing to coping behaviours that may not be supportive anymore. Survivors may grapple with pervasive feelings of shame, guilt, and a heightened sense of vulnerability. The emotional scars left by childhood abuse can create barriers to forming and maintaining meaningful connections, as individuals may struggle with issues of trust and intimacy.

Exploring and understanding these feelings is crucial for fostering healing and resilience, as it allows survivors to embark on a journey towards reclaiming their mental well-being and building healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Actions to support mental health don’t need to be challenging, costly or difficult to fit into everyday life.

Here are three free activities to support your well‑being which can be done at your own pace and comfort:

Drawing or Doodling
Pick up a pencil and let your imagination flow on paper. Creative expression can be calming and lets you share emotions without words.

Gentle Walks
Head to your local park or green space. Fresh air and gentle movement boost mood, clear your mind and reconnect you with the present moment.

Mindful Breathing
Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take slow, deep breaths. Just one minute of focused breathing can reduce tension and ground you in the here and now.

Remember, every small step counts.

Choose one that feels right today.

At One in Four, we work with survivors of child sexual abuse and violence to support growth after trauma. You can find more information about ways we can help, plus self-help materials, on our website http://on .
