Basia, one of our psychotherapists, works with people receiving care at St Christopher's to help them find peace as they approach the end of their life. It's a vital part of the care we offer, alongside pain and symptom management.

Did you know that between April 2025 and April 2026 we made 28,755 home visits to people we support?

Most of our support for people living with a life-limiting or terminal illness is provided to people living in their own homes.

We were delighted to welcome the Deputy Civic Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Scott Roche, to St Christopher's last week.

During his visit, Councillor Roche met our Care Director Amanda Mayo and clinical and community staff, and heard about our Death Literacy Project, which helps Croydon residents feel more confident talking about death, dying, and loss.

He also saw our newly upgraded Inpatient Unit, part of a ÂŁ3.6 million transformation, with over ÂŁ2 million funded by the government's emergency support for hospices. The upgrades have made rooms bigger and more homely, and introduced a hoist system for safer, more comfortable care.

Amanda Mayo, Care Director, said: "Community engagement is at the heart of everything we do. Through our work across southeast London, we aim to build strong relationships, raise awareness of the support available and ensure that people from all backgrounds feel informed, included and able to access the care they need."

“I just thought it was a place you went at the end. When I eventually came, my goal was to come and improve my mobility. I used to do everything for my mum and dad, but I’d had to stop driving and I felt helpless.

“When I heard the salsa at my first physio session I just wanted to get up and dance. My son, Brett, who is a professional dancer was there with me and the physio asked if I wanted to dance. I said I didn’t know if I was strong enough. I promised that I was going to.

“Dancing has always been a big thing for me, and I loved going out dancing. So, when I got up and danced it was like I was in a normal gym. I felt like I didn’t have cancer and everything was alright. I feel light on my feet.

“We have to find a way of letting people know that St Christopher’s is not just a place you go to say goodbye.” - Brian

After initially refusing offers of physiotherapy, Brian attended a course of six sessions and, after enjoying the physical and psychological lift, wants others to overcome any reluctance they might have about engaging with hospice care.

Our nurses continue to call Brian every couple of weeks to check he’s ok, and he’s hoping to return for more physio.

“My parents never stop raving about the people from St Christopher’s who’ve cared for and supported them, and who they say are so passionate about caring for people.

“Seeing Dad’s situation as someone who was super sporty and active, but who’s had that taken away from him is so unfair… I thought if I have to push my body outside of my comfort zone for a couple of hours, well
that’s nothing compared to what someone like him, with MND, has to endure.
