Contractors on site now, felling 53 healthy trees near Ancient Woodland on AELTC development site next to club house and Home Park Road (application via the architects for the development which does not have active planning permission).

Sustainability ?? Meet with our experts to explain why you are felling FIFTY THREE TREES BEFORE you do it!!!

*picture is of other site on same land, not this current project in action NOW!!

We are almost lost for words ….

This new missive from AELTC says:

“Our aim is to have and advocate for a positive environmental impact.

We will do this by:

- Reducing emissions from our operations to ‘net zero’ by 2030
- Being a more resource-efficient organisation
- Making a positive contribution to nature
- Using our influence to inspire wider action”

While flattening *Metropolitan Open Land, the inner London equivalent of Green Belt land.

What does this even MEAN?!!

Please see criticisms of BNG generally and specifically in relation to the un-scrutinized submissions to the GLA which experts assess as actually a 36% loss.

If you’ve been to Wimbledon you’ll know that it’s almost all concrete and hard standing - even the courts are a thin layer of grass on top of hard surface.

The new development plans are no better.

Surely, SURELY someone’s going to call this out?

Or is this what they mean by “using their influence”…?

*for the pedants in comments.

Wimbledon Park is one of the most highly protected possible - Grade II* listed Metropolitan Open land and a registered Park & Garden with Historic England. The history is long and impressive.

It’s also the site of the remnants of Ancient Woodland, that volunteers fight hard to protect and nurse back.

Part of that Ancient Woodland, Ashen Close Wood, lies on the site of the development planned by AELTC (the rest of the site including veteran trees throughout, up to 500 years old).

While a plan is supposedly in place to “ringfence” particular trees amidst the 38 tennis courts and 1000s of visitors, we know that Ancient Woodlands do not operate as individual trees but an eco system, dependent and interrelated.

We also know that AELTC have made promises before that they had no intention to keep. Like developing the historic landscape at all (promising in purchase but clearly never intending to honour that).

The “inconvenient truth” is that once gone, these precious things are gone forever.

SWP want AELTC to stop, listen and engage with the community that they have so steadfastly ignored. There IS no truth to the idea that their plan is the only plan ..
