Today is the 41st anniversary of the murder of Police Constable Keith Henry Blakelock QGM, of the Metropolitan Police.

The officer was killed in 1985 in London whilst protecting firefighters during a large scale riot.

The officer, his colleagues and firefighters were attacked by a mob with such overwhelming violence that they were forced to retreat in fear for their lives.

As they did so they were chased and attacked again by the mob who were armed with machetes, knifes, bricks and broken paving stones.

Unfortunately as P.C Blakelock ran he tripped and fell to the floor. In an instant dozens of rioters attacked the officer inflicting horrific injuries as he lay totally helpless on the ground.

Keith’s colleagues and firefighters bravely went to his assistance and managed to disperse the rioters long enough to recover Keith.

He was placed in an ambulance but died on the way to hospital.

Keith was 40 years of age. He left behind his wife and three children.

Police Constable Blakelock was later posthumously awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal.

We were honoured to place our memorial to Keith’s service, bravery and sacrifice at the Muswell Hill Roundabout, London in November 1986.

Today we laid a floral tribute today to mark the anniversary of P.C Blacklock’s tragic death.

Today marks the anniversary of yet another police officer killed in line of duty.

We remember Police Constable David Phillips of the Merseyside Police who died on this day in 2015.

P.C Phillips was killed on the central reservation of a dual carriageway in Wallasey as he was about to deploy a stopping device in front of a stolen vehicle.

On seeing the officer the driver of the stolen car deliberately drove onto the central reservation straight at the officer.

The car struck P.C Phillips inflicting terrible fatal injuries.

David was 34 years of age and left behind his wife and their young children.

We unveiled our memorial to the officer’s service and sacrifice on the 12th Ocober 2017 in Hamilton Square Gardens, Birkenhead, Merseyside where today we have laid a floral tribute to mark the anniversary of his tragic death.

Today we remembered Police Constable Malcolm Walker
of the West Midlands Police who was killed on this day 25 years in 2001.

P.C Walker was on motorcycle patrol when the driver of a stolen car deliberately rammed into him inflicting fatal injuries.

Malcolm left behind his wife and children.

We unveiled our memorial to the officer’s service and sacrifice on the 3rd July 2003 on Birchfield Road, Perry Barr, in Birmingham where this morning we laid a floral tribute to mark the anniversary of the officer’s death.

Today we remember Constable James Armstrong of the Derwent Division, now Cumbria Constabulary, who died on this day in 1847.

The officer walked 20 miles from his home station in Keswick to obtain and execute a Court’s warrant on a local man. Having worked the prolonged tour of duty the officer was unable to find overnight lodgings so decided to make his way home. He found himself on a narrow footpath high on Wanthwaite Crag where tragically Constable Armstrong slipped and fell to his death.

James was 40 years of age and left behind a widow and three children.

We unveiled our specially commissioned memorial at the Royal Hotel in Dockray, Cumbria 8 years ago in 2018 where this morning we laid a floral tribute in memory to the officer’s service and sacrifice.

Today marks the 6th anniversary of the murder of Police Sergeant Matiu ‘Matt’ Ratana in London.

He was shot and killed by a prisoner in the custody suite at Croydon police station.

Matt was due to retire after giving years of service to the public.

We were honoured to be joined by his family, loved ones, friends, colleagues & members of the wider police family when we unveiled our memorial to mark his service and sacrifice in front of the police station were he died.

This morning we laid a floral tribute at the memorial in his honour.

The memorial stone, which is double sided, is illuminated at night by low level up-lighting. There is a QR code attached to the memorial which when scanned opens the Police Memorial Trust website’s page for P.S Ratana.

This Sunday our Chairman and members of the Board of Trustees will join members of the police family in Belfast for the annual National Police Memorial Day Service.

Our charity campaigned for, helped fund and now maintain the United Kingdom’s National Police Memorial which stands on the The Mall in London.

The Police Roll of Honour we proudly display in the memorial records the names of 4,655 officers who have lost their lives in the service of the British public. It will play an important part in the Rememberance Service.

This morning we laid our floral tribute to mark the anniversary of the tragic deaths of P.C Fiona Bone and P.C Nicola Hughes.

Today we remember Police Constable Fiona Bone and Police Constable Nicola Hughes of The Greater Manchester Police who were murdered on this day 14 years ago in 2012.

Following a false report of crime the officers were lured to a house in Mottram, Manchester.

When they arrived at the address a gunman emerged from within the property and attacked them.

Both the unarmed officers were callously shot and killed.

Fiona was just 32 years old.
Nicola was only 23 years old.

The officer’s cold blooded murders prompted an outpouring of revulsion and sympathy from around the world.

In July 2016 we were honoured and privileged to erect our memorial to Fiona and Nicola to mark their service and sacrifice. It stands close to the place where they died at The Hub in Mottram in Hyde. The specially commissioned stone is illuminated at night by a soft overhead light.

Today we remember Inspector Raymond Codling of the Greater Manchester Police who was murdered on this day 37 years ago in 1989.

The officer and a colleague were in the lorry park of Birch Services on the M62 motorway in Manchester where they saw a man acting suspiciously. As they approached the man to speak to him he produced a gun and shot both the unarmed officers.

Inspector Codling fell to the floor where he was shot a second time and killed.

Ray was 49 years old. He was married with children.

The second officer was seriously injured but survived the attack.

We unveiled our memorial to Ray’s service & sacrifice 35 years ago in 1991. It stands at the entrance to the Westbound services where today we have laid a floral tribute to mark the tragic anniversary.

Today we remember all the innocent people who were murdered by terrorist on this day 25 years ago in 2001 in the United States of America.

Of those killed more than seventy were police officers.

It was the single largest loss of police lives in history.

The majority of the officers who died did so as they went to help victims of the attacks on the Twin Towers at The World Trade Center in New York.

They all knew what they faced but still they went forward.

In total 412 First Responders were killed that day.

It’s an horrendous fact that since the attacks thousands of police officers and first responders have died due to 9/11 related illnesses contracted during the search, rescue and recovery operation.
