Today we remember Police Constable David Ian Haigh of the North Yorkshire Police who was murdered on the 17th June 1982.

The officer was in Norwood Edge car park in the Stainburn Forest in Otley on the outskirts of Harrogate where he encountered a man sleeping in a car.

Unbeknown to him the man was a hardened violent criminal. As the unarmed officer questioned the man as to why he was in the area the man produced a gun and shot him dead.

Ian was only 29 years old. He was married with a young family.

This morning we laid a floral tribute at our memorial in memory of the officer’s service and sacrifice.

On this day 34 years ago in 1992 Special Constable Glenn Goodman of the North Yorkshire Police was shot and murdered by terrorists.

In the early hours of the morning the officer was on mobile patrol with his colleague, P.C Sandy Kelly, in the Tadcaster area of North Yorkshire. Both officers were unarmed.

Their attention was drawn to a car which they decided to stop. Unbeknown to the officers the car contained two armed terrorists.

After questioning the men P.C Kelly returned to the police car to verify their details via the police radio.

S.C Goodman remained with the two men.

At this point the passenger got out of the car and without any warning shot the officer at point blank range, hitting him in the chest.

Glenn was 37 years old, married with a baby son. He was later posthumously awarded The Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.

The gunman also shot P.C Kelly who was left seriously injured but mercifully survived.

In May 1994 we erected our memorial to Glenn’s service and sacrifice. It stands at the junction of Wetherby Road and Station Road in Tadcaster where this morning we laid a floral tribute to mark the anniversary of the officer’s murder.

Today we remembered Police Constable Stephen (Steve) Jones of the Avon & Somerset Constabulary who was killed 27 years ago today in 1999.

The officer was killed as he deployed a ‘spike strip’ in an effort to stop a 115 mph Police pursuit of a stolen car on the M48 motorway in Bristol.

When the offender in the speeding vehicle saw the officer deploying the device he deliberately drove straight at the officer striking him inflicting terrible fatal injuries.

Stephen was 34 years of age.

He was survived by his wife Heather and two children, Bronwen and Kieran, who were aged just six and four at the time.

On the 30th October 2001 The Police Memorial Trust unveiled our memorial stone to Stephen’s service and sacrifice at the Moto Service Area at Severn View on the M48 where this morning we laid a floral tribute.

Today we remember Police Constable Ronan McCloskey of the Metropolitan Police who was killed on this day in 1987.

The officer was on his very first night duty when he stopped a car to speak to the driver.

Realising the driver was drunk P.C McCloskey attempted to arrest the man. As he did so the man drove off at speed dragging the officer for half a mile before crashing the car inflicting fatal injuries to the officer.

Ronan was just 25 years old.

We placed our memorial in remembrance of his service and sacrifice at the corner of Dudden Hill Land & Denzil Road, London in March 1989. This morning we laid flowers as a tribute to the officer.
