This weekend we remember Police Constable Andrew Harper of Thames Valley Police who was killed on the 15th August 2019 near Sulhamstead in Berkshire.

The officer was responding to a report of a vehicle being stolen when he intercepted the offenders as they drove off towing the stolen vehicle behind their getaway car.

As P.C Harper alighted his police car and approached the offenders they drove off at speed causing him to be caught in the tow rope dragging him behind inflicting terrible injuries causing his death.

Andrew was just 28 years old and had only been married a matter of weeks.

We unveiled our memorial to P.C Harper’s service and sacrifice in Forbury Gardens, Reading on the 23rd of April this year where we have laid flowers as a mark of respect.

This morning we remember P.C Bryan Moore & P.C Andrew Munn of Leicestershire Constabulary who were killed on this day in 2002.

The officers were standing at their stationary police car ready to deploy a device to stop a speeding vehicle which was being driven by a drunk driver.

When the driver, who had a history of violence against the police, saw the officers he accelerated from 60mph to 85mph. He then deliberately drove off the road in order to hit and the two officers. Both men received fatal injuries in the resulting impact.

Bryan, 39, was married with three children.

Andrew, 37, was also married with two young children.

We unveiled our memorial to the officers’ service and sacrifice in July 2005 at Donington Park Services on the M1 motorway where today we laid a floral tribute .

Today we remember Detective Sergeant Christopher Head, Temporary Detective Constable David Wombwell and Police Constable Geoffrey Fox of the Metropolitan Police.

They were murdered on this day 60 years in 1966 in Braybrook Street, Shepherd’s Bush, London.

The unarmed officers were in plain clothes on mobile patrol in an unmarked police car when they happened upon a parked van containing three men.

Unbeknown to the officers the men had just taken part in an armed robbery.

D.S Head, 30, and TDC Wombwell, 25, approached the van to ask the driver for his driving documents. As David Wombwell was recording the driver’s details in his notebook the front seat passenger pulled out a gun and shot him dead.

Christopher Head ran back towards the police car to radio for help but he too was shot and killed.

Geoffrey Fox, 41, was killed as he sat in the police car by a second member of the gang.

The British public were outraged at the cold blooded murders and their sorrow was illustrated by the 1000s of people who lined the streets at the officers's funerals.

We were honoured to erected our memorial stone to the officers service and sacrifice at the place where they fell in June 1988.

This morning we laid a floral tribute at the memorial.

This morning our Chairman and members of the charity’s Board of Trustees hosted the Police Unity Tour riders and their support team at the United Kingdom’s National Police Memorial on The Mall in London for the beginning of the group’s ride to the National Arboretum.
As they set off Mrs. Winner wished the riders a safe journey.

Today we remember Police Constable Peter Charles Guthrie QPM of the Warwickshire & Coventry Constabulary.

The unarmed officer was shot and murdered in 1972 whilst attempting to arrest a man who had broken into a gun shop in Coventry.

Peter was just twenty one years of age. He had been married just seven weeks before his death.

He was later posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.

We unveiled our memorial to his service, bravery and sacrifice in 2022. This morning we laid a floral tribute at the memorial to mark the anniversary of his murder.

On this Sunday morning we remember Police Constable George Snipe of Birmingham City Police who was murdered in 1897.

P.C Snipe was on a late evening patrol in the city when he was summoned to a pub on Bridge Street West where a violent disturbance was taking place.

He and a colleague arrived at the pub just as closing time was taking place to break up the trouble The officers arrested two men for being drunk and disorderly.

As the officers tried to walk the offenders to the nearby police station a crowd of the mens drunken friends launched a savage attack on the policemen in an effort to make them release their prisoners.

The mob threw stones at the officers but soon became even more violent and began attacking them by punching and kicking the constables who were forced to release the arrested men and make their way to a nearby church in a bid to escape the mob’s violent assault.

As they were trapped in the doorway of the church P.C Snipe was hit on the temple with a brick inflicting a serious injury from which he died four hours later.

George was only 28 years old, married and the father of a young daughter. His wife was expecting their second child at the time of his murder.

In September 2019 we erected our memorial to the officer’s service and sacrifice near to where he fell in what is now the Panell Croft Village complex.

This morning we laid our floral tribute there to mark the anniversary of Constable Snipe’s murder.

Today we remember Detective Sergeant Raymond Purdy of the Metropolitan Police who was murdered on this day in 1959.

Following a covert operation the unarmed officer arrested a man for a serious blackmail offence.

Whilst walking the suspect to a nearby police vehicle the man broke free from the officer and ran off.

After a foot chase the offender was cornered in the porch of a nearby apartment block where he produced a gun and shot the DS Purdy in the heart at point blank range.

The officer died where he fell.

Raymond was married with a family. He was 43 years of age.

We erected our memorial to honour the officer’s service, bravery and sacrifice in 2019 where today we laid a floral tribute to mark the anniversary of his tragic death.

Today we remember Police Constable John Kew of the West Riding Constabulary who was murdered on this day in 1900

On the 10th July the unarmed officer attended a house in the Swinton area of Rotherham following reports that the two male occupants had been threatening people with a firearm. As P.C Kew was questioning the men one of them pulled out a revolver and shot him. The officer was seriously injured but tried to gain control of the weapon at which point the second man took the gun and shot him again. The men then fled.

Other officers arrived on the scene where the mortality wounded constable gave them a detailed account of what had happened and named his attackers. He was rushed to the local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

John was a married man with a young family.

We unveiled our memorial to his service, bravery and sacrifice in September 2023 where this morning we laid a floral tribute to mark the anniversary of his murder.

Today we remember Police Constable Ian Dibell GM of Essex Police.

On this day in 2012 Ian was off duty at home when he was made aware that a man armed with a handgun was in the street attempting to murder one of his male neighbours.

Having ensured the police were informed of the situation Ian, armed only with his warrant card and knowing exactly what danger he would face went outside to help.

As Ian identified himself to the gunman as a police officer the the intended victim took the opportunity to escape to a place of safety. There is no doubt that Ian’s intervention saved the man’s life.

Ian then attempted to arrest the gunman but as he did so the man shot him at point blank range in the chest and killed him.

Ian was a 41 year old family man.

The Officer was later posthumously awarded the United Kingdom’s 2nd highest civilian bravery award, the George Medal. Ian went well beyond his duty and paid the ultimate price.

We unveiled our memorial to Ian’s service, bravery and sacrifice in November 2015 in the Memorial Gardens on Marine Parade, Clacton-on- Sea, Essex where this morning we laid a floral tribute to mark the anniversary of his murder.

He was a true hero.

Today we remember Police Constable John Schofield of Surrey Constabulary who was murdered on this day in 1974.

The unarmed officer was the driver of a police car on nighttime patrol with two colleagues in Caterham when they saw a man on the street who was carrying a large hold-all. Due to the lateness of the hour they decided to speak to him. As they pulled up alongside the man he pulled a firearm from the hold-all and shot at the officers fatally wounding John.

The other two officers were both injured in the incident but thankfully survived.

The murderer was later arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment.

We were honoured to erect our memorial to Constable Schofield’s service and sacrifice in July 2024 on Croydon Road at the junction with Tillingdown Hill.

This morning we laid a floral tribute to mark the officer’s service and sacrifice.
