Linguistica Antverpiensia, New Series – Themes in Translation Studies, Vol. 27, 2028

This journal invites proposals for a guest-edited thematic issue exploring innovative and internationally relevant topics in Translation and Interpreting Studies. Proposals should present a clearly defined theme, research topics or questions, its relevance and originality, and the guest editors’ expertise in the proposed research area.

To be considered, proposals must include the following five elements:

guest editors’ names and affiliations;
a title and a brief presentation of the proposed theme (500–1000 words), consisting of a general description of the proposed theme, followed by more specific research topics and/or research questions;
a working reference list in APA format (7th edition);
a motivation (max. 500 words) explaining why the proposed theme is innovative, as well as relevant for Translation and Interpreting Studies at large;
guest editors’ track records in the suggested research domain(s) (e.g., proof of academic achievements, credentials, expertise).

AVT Matters 2026: Navigating AVT in the New Era: Creativity, Accessibility, and Responsibility. School of English Studies, Shanghai International Studies University (Online).
Co-organizers: Hong Kong Audio Description Studies Association (HKADSA), Centre for Translation Studies (CenTras), University College London.

This international online conference aims to create a focused space for scholars, early-career researchers, postgraduate students and practitioners working on AVT, media accessibility and related fields.

AVT has become one of the most dynamic areas in Translation Studies, shaped by the rapid expansion of streaming platforms, new modes of media consumption, advances in language technologies, and growing attention to accessibility and inclusion. Practices ranging from subtitling/captioning, dubbing, voice-over, audio description (AD), and subtitling for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) to game localisation and song/lyric translation are being reconfigured by changing audiences, multilingual media flows, and AI-assisted workflows. Yet AVT is never shaped by technology alone. It is also made through specific languages, institutions, platforms, classrooms, professional routines, audiences, cultural memories and access needs. In China, East Asia and other multilingual contexts, screen translation and media accessibility raise questions that cannot be fully answered by global industry narratives: How do local media cultures reshape AVT concepts and methods? How do audiences experience translated and accessible media across linguistic, sensory and cultural differences? How can researchers, teachers and practitioners describe emerging practices without losing sight of human judgement, creativity and responsibility?

Translation as Post-Occupational Practice?
Translational agency is being reconfigured. The rapid acceleration of radical socio-economic shifts has brought previously latent dimensions into sharp relief. These realities demand a systematic interrogation of the landscape, moving beyond mere description to address the mutating role of translation practices. The impact of human (individual or collective) non-professional translation, which has already received considerable attention within translation studies, is now systemically compounded by the more recent rise of algorithmic governance and automated labour. This interrogation may revolve, among others, around the critical needs of the post-expertise, post-labour, and post-economic dimensions of translation, seeking to understand how these forces reconfigure the very nature of translational agency.

In light of these transformative shifts, contributions are invited for this special issue to critically engage with the themes of expertise, labour, and the post-economy.

Decisions on abstracts will be made by 15 December 2026.

Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit their articles (up to 8,000 words in length, including abstract, notes and references) for peer review by 30 April 2027. Final manuscripts will be due by 30 November 2027 for publication in May 2028.
