Study: Subtitles for Deaf Children

🏆ESIST Languages & The Media Conference Grant Winner Announced 🏆

Thank you to everyone who applied for our conference grant.
We were delighted to receive several applications and were highly impressed by their outstanding quality.

We are thrilled to announce that the recipient of the grant is Khadidja Merakchi at Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh:

"I have been teaching subtitling, translation, and interpreting at Heriot-Watt University since 2019, alongside working as a practising subtitler and translator. My recent research has focused on community-oriented pedagogical practices and the role of human creativity in media localisation in the age of AI.
I work closely with independent filmmakers from minority and underrepresented backgrounds.

I have been a member of European Association for Studies in Screen Translation and Subtle - The Subtitlers' Association for several years, and I value both as spaces for meaningful conversations, collaboration, and mutual support within the subtitling and audiovisual translation community.

I am genuinely delighted and humbled to be the recipient of the ESIST 2026 grant to attend Languages & The Media 2026, where I will share reflections and learnings from my recent project Women’s Voices in Film: The Power of Storytelling, centred on the Xhosa-language films Chosi Ngantsomi (Once Upon a Time) and Qhawekazi (African Queen) by South African filmmaker Minizobuhle Mmango.

Languages & The Media 🎉 The time has come to open the Call for Applications! ESIST is offering a Conference travel grant and fee waiver to support one of our members in presenting their work at Languages & The Media 2026 in London in November.

This is a great opportunity for you to join ESIST today and benefit from this amazing opportunity!

The conference grant includes:
- a speaker fee waiver
- a €500 subsidy for travel/accommodation/subsistence

Eligibility criteria:
-You must be a paid-up ESIST member for the year the conference is taking place.
-For L&M 2026, you must be a paid-up member for 2026.
-Your conference abstract for the Presentation or Poster -------------Presentation at the L&M 2026 conference has been accepted.
-You have completed and submitted our online application form.
-Early career researchers/professionals will be given priority.

Scoring criteria
1. Distance: How far is the candidate traveling?
2. Benefit: What is the perceived benefit of the grant to the candidate's career
3. Add. funding: Is this grant the only source of funding available to the candidate? (Considering employment status and access to additional funding)
4. Quality: Overall assessment of the candidate's application
5. Impact/Innovation: Potential impact of the proposed presentation or innovative aspect of the study
