Movement To Work

Movement To Work Movement to Work (MtW) is a vibrant not-for-profit coalition of UK employers, youth-outreach organisa

Founded in 2013 and provoked by the global financial crisis, Movement to Work (MtW) was born out of a commitment made by a small collective of business leaders and civil servants to fix the endemic problem of youth unemployment in the UK, aiming to break the vicious circle of ‘no experience, no job’ that so many young people face. Today it is a vibrant not-for-profit community of UK employers, yo

uth-outreach organisations, training providers and government allies – all aiming to level the playing field for young age people aged 16-30 facing barriers to work. As a robust delivery partner, we work with employers to design and implement brilliant work experience and vocational solutions for their organisation, either in-house or through one of our recommended training providers. With hundreds of organisational members, Movement to Work has a proven track record of driving social mobility with over 95,000 work placements delivered to date, made possible by employers, charities and Government working together. Collectively we have provided young people with diverse and empowering experiences ranging from hospitality to engineering, with regional hubs working in London, the Midlands, North East and North West to make a real difference nationwide. Our team is diverse and dynamic – mostly seconded from employer partners, bringing in bright minds from a range of industries committed to putting their skills to tackling youth unemployment. We are formally B2B and our sweet spot is fuelling powerful partnerships where everybody wins. We are active – we run a steady flow of events throughout the year, from small forums to large-scare awards ceremonies, and we continue to raise our profile in spheres of influence to ensure youth employment remains on the agenda for political and business leaders alike. In 2020 we launched our MtW Youth Ambassador group, whereby young people share ideas and run projects within our organisation to ensure we continue to engage directly with them as well as for them. We help – it works for them, it works for business, it works for society.

🚀 YouthPath has launched! 🚀

With some of the highest NEET rates in the country, too many young people in the West Midlands are facing barriers to work opportunities.

We’ve partnered with the West Midlands Combined Authority to launch YouthPath - a campaign to help local businesses deliver more opportunities for young people and tackle youth unemployment in the region.

Our CEO Sareena Bains said:

“We’re delighted to be on this journey with the WMCA. By creating meaningful pathways into work, we’re not just opening doors to young people struggling most, we’re helping businesses to become more inclusive and fit for the future. We have over 10 years of experience in supporting businesses with their youth employment strategies – and as a charity, we do it all free of charge. So, West Midlands business leaders—join YouthPath and help shape a brighter future for young people in the region.”

At this week’s launch event, we heard inspiring stories, including from Katie, who came from being NEET to building a successful career in retail with M&S through the Marks & Start programme.

But we need more employers to step up and help shape a brighter future for young people.

Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: “By engaging with employers we can help to open up opportunities for young people to access meaningful work experience, training opportunities and apprenticeships.”

Big news! 🎉

We’re delighted to welcome Group, the largest business and commercial bank in the UK, as a Movement to Work member - joining our network of employers committed to tackling youth employment.

NatWest Group is already doing incredible work to support young people into meaningful careers— through their Elevate Apprenticeship programme, they offer young people aged 16-24 from low socio-economic communities the opportunity to start their career in banking whilst gaining an apprenticeship qualification.

Since 2020 NatWest Group has offered more than 700 young people permanent roles through this wonderful apprenticeship programme. With thousands of young people facing barriers to work in the UK, we know that real opportunities can change lives.

That’s why we’re so excited to work with NatWest Group to scale up their impact and make a real difference.
