Muslim political prisoner Munir Ahmed Farooqi passed away yesterday at HMP Frankland at the age of 69.
Farooqi was a well loved caller to Islam who held a long standing street stall in Manchester city centre, distributing Islamic literature and speaking to passers-by about Islam.
Following a complex police entrapment operation, he arrested and convicted of encouraging “terrorism” and sentenced to four life sentences in a highly politicised and Islamophobic prosecution.
This came despite there being no evidence of a plot, no weapons procured and no attempts to recruit or send any individual anywhere.
His crime was views and opinions about Jihad.
For 17 years, he remained incarcerated while continuing to hold firmly to his faith.
He was a man who made immense sacrifices for the sake of Allah SWT and the Ummah. His family remember him as a man through whom thousands were guided back to Islam, and as an example of unwavering steadfastness in the face of immense hardship.
His imprisonment and the ill treatment he faced came at an enormous cost. His health deteriorated severely, and he ultimately lost his sight, hearing and limbs through amputations.
Yet, despite the suffering he endured, he remained steadfast upon the path of Allah SWT.
May Allah SWT be pleased with Munir Farooqi, accept his sacrifices and patience, and grant him the highest ranks of Jannah. Ameen.
