Street Child

Street Child Our purpose is to see all children safe, in school and learning. We are Street Child. We believe every child deserves the chance to go to school and learn.

Currently, 125 million school-aged children are out of education worldwide. Millions more children are in school but failing to learn. Street Child believes that achieving universal basic education is the single greatest step that can be taken towards the elimination of global poverty.

What does keeping children safe look like in Nigeria?

Child labour, early marriage, violence, disability, and conflict can all stand between a child and their education. Addressing these barriers means working closely with children, families, schools, and communities to help ensure children can access and continue their education.

Through Street Child's Education For Every Child Today (EFECT) programme, a partnership with Education Above All Foundation, with support from Qatar Fund for Development, over 50,000 children across Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Liberia have received child protection support since the programme began.

We spoke with Jessica Adams, Street Child’s Protection Manager, and Alhassan Jusu, Project Manager, about how child protection support helps children return to education and remain in school. Read the full Q&A here: https://www.street-child.org/news-media/keeping-children-safe-so-they-can-learn/

Street Child is closely monitoring the evolving Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring Uganda.

Given the proximity of the outbreak's epicentre to our work, we are taking preventative measures across our operations, including awareness-raising with staff and programme participants, promoting regular handwashing, and encouraging practices that reduce the risk of transmission.

Our experience responding to the 2013–16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa showed that local organisations and communities are best placed to lead effective responses. As the situation develops, we will continue supporting our network of local partners and urge all responses to be rooted in community-led solutions.

At 16, Naomi* is building a future on her own terms.

With support from Street Child, she has secured an apprenticeship at a local cosmetics shop, gaining skills, confidence, and a pathway to independence.

But Naomi is growing up in the shadow of a crisis the world is barely talking about. Nearly a decade of conflict in Cameroon has disrupted the lives and education of more than a million children.

Recently, our Head of Africa Programmes, Megan Lees-McCowan, travelled to some of the country's most conflict-affected regions to see first-hand how Street Child is supporting girls like Naomi.

In her latest blog, Megan shares what she witnessed: the realities facing children and families, the determination of the girls she met, and why investing in girls' futures matters now more than ever.

Teachers shape futures every day. 📚

But they need the right training, tools, and support to help every child reach their full potential.

Since Street Child began in 2008, we have worked with more than 23,000 teachers in some of the most disaster-hit and low-income countries, supporting them to earn important qualifications and access mentoring.

In Uganda, a wedding dress is helping send children to school👰🏾

Margaret*, a mum of five living in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, started renting out bridal gowns and decorations in her community after receiving a small start-up grant through our Family Business for Education project, run by .

Within a week, she had secured her first client: a church leader organising four weddings.

Today, her younger children are enrolled in primary school with the uniforms and supplies they need, and her eldest daughter is on track to complete Senior 4 (the final year of lower secondary school)🧡

Today, we joined campaigners from the coalition outside the Global Partnerships Conference in London with one clear message: there is no shared future without education.

As global leaders and development partners discussed the future of international cooperation, we called on the UK Government to place education at the heart of its renewed approach to international development.
Education is one of the most powerful drivers of progress. It strengthens economies, reduces inequality, and helps build safer, more stable societies. Yet millions of children remain out of school as widening funding gaps threaten decades of progress.

In every context, young people consistently tell us that education is their top priority. Partner countries are making it theirs too, with African Union leaders declaring a Decade of Accelerated Action for the Transformation of Education and Skills Development.
A genuine commitment to partnership means listening to these priorities and backing them with sustained investment.

The earliest years of a child's life shape everything that comes after.

Our Early Childhood Development programmes — like this one in Kenya — reach children during these critical years through play-based learning activities, helping children build creativity, confidence and problem-solving skills that form the foundations for learning for life. 🧡
