In summer, Willesden Jewish Cemetery roses add to the beauty of our historic cemetery landscape. Coming to use from Ancient Greece and Rome, roses became a frequent sight in Victorian garden cemetery landscape, and now they are here to be enjoyed by all today.

What do refugee architects, modernist design and Willesden Jewish Cemetery have in common?

Quite a lot, it turns out.

A huge thank you to Valeria Carullo from RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) for a fascinating afternoon exploring the stories of architects who sought refuge in Britain before and during the Second World War.

One of the joys of events like this is that they help us uncover new connections. Research from the RIBA Refugee Committee Project has already revealed previously unknown links to people buried here at Willesden, helping us tell even more of the remarkable story of London's Jewish community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the talk and guided walk.

You never quite know what stories you'll discover in a cemetery.

A gifted poet, translator, educator and community leader, Alice Julia Lucas (née Montefiore) (1851-1935) helped shape Jewish literary and educational life in Britain for more than half a century.

From publishing The Children's Pentateuch and translating medieval Hebrew poetry, to serving as the first President of the Jewish Study Society, Alice dedicated her life to scholarship, faith and community service. She regularly contributed to the Jewish Chronicle, Jewish Quarterly Review and other periodicals. Her first book was published in 1876, ‘Translations from the German Poets of 18th & 19th Centuries’, followed by many textbooks for Children on the Torah' and Jewish History.

Her moving poem The Jewish Soldier, written in memory of those who died in the South African War, remains a powerful tribute and is displayed in the Prayer Hall at Willesden Jewish Cemetery.

We are proud to honour Alice and her husband Henry Lucas with one of the first Heritage Plaques at Willesden Jewish Cemetery. This new initiative celebrates the remarkable individuals buried here, while helping to support the conservation and interpretation of this unique heritage site for future generations.

Discover more about Alice Lucas and other creative personalities buried here on our special guided walk, Creativity Unwrapped at Willesden Jewish Cemetery: Sunday, 14 June, at 11 am.

🌿 Thanks to an Eco Grant from , the House of Life Heritage Centre at Willesden Jewish Cemetery is transforming its car park into a vibrant sensory and heritage garden with accessible planting troughs for schools and the wider community.

Following our Tu B’Shevat launch and school sessions earlier this year, families, volunteers and members of Brent Mencap joined us during half term to plant lavender, eucalyptus, flowers and herbs, while learning about biodiversity, sustainability and the importance of caring for our environment.

It’s been inspiring to see people of all ages and backgrounds working together to create a greener space for both people and wildlife. We can’t wait to watch the garden flourish over the summer and welcome everyone back in the autumn for winter bulb planting. 🌱✨

Still buzzing from last Sunday! We welcomed 45 guests to Willesden Jewish Cemetery’s historic prayer hall for an afternoon of poetry, remembrance and connection.

The event brought together volunteers, family members and guests to share readings of Nina's original poetry and Hebrew translations, filling the space with creativity, thoughtfulness and warmth.

We were pleased to hear reflections from Nomi Willis, our Volunteer and Learning Programmes Coordinator, Jeremy Schonfield, Professor of Jewish Liturgy at Leo Baeck College, and Nina's grandchildren, Peter Salaman Hamburger and Jenny Salaman Manson. Together, they painted a holistic picture of a woman who made a profound mark on British Jewry.

The afternoon concluded with a visit to Nina's grave, offering a moment of quiet reflection and remembrance.

DEDICATION
Blessing the songs of old,
Summoning forth the new,
You with a wand of gold
Lent them a life more true.
Now as their ways unfold
Out into vistas blue,
Here stand the new and old,
Giving themselves to you.

More than a historic cemetery, Willesden Jewish Cemetery is also a peaceful green space in northwest London.

Volunteers help care for plants, pathways and wildlife habitats, creating an environment where heritage and nature exist side by side. Due to their efforts, Willesden Jewish Cemetery is a place for reflection, biodiversity and quiet discovery in the middle of a busy city.

Big Thank You for all your hard work!
