International Academic Projects (IAP) is an international educational charity organising courses in art conservation and related subjects.

The majority of the professional development courses in conservation and museum studies take place in Britain and Europe from June through August. The duration of these courses, led by international experts, varies between one and five days. The courses often address very particular types of knowledge or skills. IAP also co-operates with institutions and colleagues abroad to provide training courses for museum, conservation and archaeological personnel. Courses outside of the UK have been held in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Australia, the USA, Austria, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Romania, Ireland, Switzerland, France, Finland and Malta. IAP is particularly interested in bringing some of its conservation training courses to the countries of Latin America. We are happy to discuss initiatives with interested parties.

In this course David Saunders will discuss the aspects of museum lighting related to conservation, visibility, display, access and sustainability.
On the first day he will look at how light levels and exposure effect objects and how to assess light sensitivity, while keeping in mind visibility, comfortable viewing and current guidelines.
On the second day we will build on this and consider sustainability and how to develop balanced lighting strategies that work well for conservation and access.

Pests can attack a wide range of materials including ethnographic, social history, textiles, furniture, paper, books and taxidermy. An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programme can only be effective if there is an understanding of which insects are present and whether pest numbers are stable, increasing or decreasing.
This two-session virtual course will discuss Integrated Pest Management, Trapping and Monitoring, and how to control Insect Pests.

Digital microscopy is a technique that allows for quick and straightforward microscopic observation and imaging, using dedicated instruments that display a live image on a screen. This presentation will introduce digital microscopy as a routine tool for heritage science, and explore the hardware and software features that allow easy control of parameters such as magnification, focus, and lighting. Beyond basic operation, we will also look at more specialised techniques such as focus stacking, large specimen observation, lighting manipulation, and video recording.

This presentation discusses the use of ErYAG lasers to remove aged bronze paint repairs from gilded surfaces. Gerry Alabone will address the common conservation challenge of removing darkened old bronze paint repairs from sensitive oil gilded surfaces which have similar solubility parameters, thus allowing treatments to be carried out that would not be possible with the use of solvents alone.

Steve Koob (who sadly died in June) had keenly anticipated attending next week’s IIC conference in Ghent, especially as he had fond memories of attending an ICCROM conference (on on-site conservation) in Ghent in 1985 and was looking forward to catching up with friends and colleagues – some of whom had also attended that 1985 conference.

Some of us have arranged to meet informally to raise a glass in Steve’s memory and would be very happy to be joined by friends and acquaintances of Steve.

Our next virtual seminar examines how we can scientifically study a leather object and its deterioration. Marysia Tarnowska will cover various methods to learn about properties of leather, chemical structures of different animal skins and the influence of tanning methods, as well as health and safety.
