Five objects to look forward to at the LAPADA Berkeley Square Fair this October. From 16th-century cartography to 20th-century design, we’re taking a closer look at five works to seek out at this year’s Fair.
L.S. Lowry’s An old street in Berwick-upon-Tweed, 1952, offered by Macconnal-Mason Galleries. Lowry first visited Berwick in 1935 and returned frequently over the following decades, with the town becoming an important source of inspiration throughout the 1940s and 50s. This intimate street scene captures children at play among its narrow streets and has distinguished provenance, having passed through both the Lefevre Gallery and Crane Kalman Gallery. François Linke, Louis XV-style gilt-bronze mounted centre table, c.1900, offered by Butchoff Antiques.
A rare example of one of François Linke’s most recognisable designs, created around the time the Parisian cabinetmaker was achieving international acclaim. The table combines intricate floral marquetry and geometric parquetry with elaborate gilt-bronze mounts designed by sculptor Léon Messagé, including Linke’s distinctive crab-like acanthus mount. An especially lavish version of the design, its cubed bois satiné parquetry top was considerably more costly to produce than the glass-topped alternative. Butchoff Antiques
Gerard de Jode, Universi Orbis seu Terreni Globi in Plano Effigies, 1578, offered by Altea Gallery.
This rare 16th-century world map is presented in a striking cordiform, or heart-shaped, projection, surrounded by wind-heads with terrestrial and celestial spheres below. Published in De Jode’s Speculum Orbis Terrarum in 1578, it appeared only in the atlas’s first edition and survives here in fine original colour. The map includes a supposed Northwest Passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific, with Japan at its eastern end, offering a fascinating glimpse of how the world was understood nearly 450 years ago.
