At Urban Synergy, we focus on early support, to build confidence and help young people see what’s possible for their future. Our in-school and on-line career seminars work to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace. These programmes are specially designed to inspire and empower young people. We introduce them to role models who have overcome similar barriers, that raise their aspirations, offer a path to follow, and pass on the confidence to write their own future. We Guide

Not only do we seek to inspire young people, we guide them on their unique paths to the workplace via access to aspirational - yet relatable - mentors. Through engaging 1-to-1 online e-mentoring, these leaders offer valuable insight from their personal stories and how they carved out a path to success. Based on the specific needs of their mentee, our mentors work with them to build their confidence in personal and professional skills, such as presenting, interview practice, and career guidance. We know our young people thrive when they feel motivated, valued and challenged. That’s why we work with industry-leading partners to secure meaningful work experience opportunities that ignite their passions and act as a catalyst for their journey into the workplace. This programme helps us to create diverse, work-ready talent, prepared for their next opportunity. We believe that through these efforts, in collaboration with our partners, we can build a workforce based on fair opportunity, that everyone can benefit from.

Social Mobility Awareness Day

Social mobility is not abstract.
It is about whether young people can access the people, places, skills, confidence and opportunities that help shape their futures.
For too many young people, talent is not the issue.

Access is.
Access to relatable role models.
Access to professional networks.
Access to workplace insight.
Access to mentoring and guidance.
Access to real opportunities that help turn ambition into action.

At Urban Synergy, we work with young people across Lewisham and wider London to help close that gap.

As a youth empowerment and social mobility charity, we support young people through role models, mentoring, career insight, work experience and long-term support — helping them build confidence, develop skills and see pathways that may once have felt out of reach.

Because opportunity should not depend on background, postcode or who you already know.

Volunteering is often described as “giving back”.
But at Urban Synergy, we see it as something even more powerful.

It creates access.

Every time a volunteer shares their time, experience or expertise, they help a young person gain access to opportunities that can shape their future — from professional networks and workplace experiences to career insights and confidence-building conversations.

A mentor can help a young person believe in their potential.
A role model can show them what is possible.
A mock interview can prepare them for a life-changing opportunity.
A workplace visit can turn an aspiration into a tangible goal.

This is why volunteering matters...
It is not simply an act of generosity. It is a practical way to support social mobility by helping young people access the knowledge, connections and experiences that can open doors.

Today I’m attending the launch of new research from Lancaster University and the Work Foundation on place-based approaches to tackling the NEET challenge.

This is such an important conversation to be part of.

Across the UK, too many young people are not in education, employment or training. But behind that statistic are individual young people with ambition, ability and potential, many of whom are facing barriers that are shaped by where they live, who they know, what they have been exposed to, and whether they can access the right support at the right time.

At Urban Synergy, we see this every day.

Young people do not lack talent.

Too often, they lack access to networks, relatable role models, professional environments, early career insight and the confidence that comes from being shown what is possible.

That is why place-based approaches matter.

The challenges facing young people in Lewisham, London, Morecambe, Liverpool or any other community will not be solved by one-size-fits-all thinking. They need local insight, trusted organisations, strong partnerships, employers willing to open their doors, and long-term support that starts before a young person reaches crisis point.

For Urban Synergy, this work has always been about turning barriers into bridges.

Through mentoring, role models, workplace experiences and partnerships, we help young people see pathways that may once have felt out of reach and support them to take the next step with confidence.

I’m pleased to be in the room today, listening, learning and contributing to a conversation that has real consequences for young people’s futures.

Because if we are serious about social mobility, youth employment and opportunity, we need to make sure young people are not just discussed in policy spaces.

They need to be heard, understood and supported with action.

Headlines this week warn of a £125bn youth unemployment crisis.

But young people are not a cost to society. They are the future workforce, innovators, leaders and changemakers we cannot afford to overlook.

At Urban Synergy, we have been opening doors since 2007... connecting young people to mentors, role models and real workplace experiences.

In the past year alone, we supported 9,513 students and helped young people access 9,440 hours of work experience.

A generation is only “lost” if we stop investing in them.

We choose access.
We choose confidence.
We choose young people.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the people and organisations who give their time, experience and encouragement to help young people move forward.

Mentoring does not have to be intimidating or overly formal.

Sometimes, the most valuable thing a mentor can offer is time, honesty and a willingness to listen.

For a young person exploring their next step, one conversation with someone who has been there before can help make a career path feel clearer, closer and more achievable.

Inside our school engagement work

For many young people, Urban Synergy begins in the classroom.
Before mentoring, insight days, work experience, or alumni progression, there is often a first moment of connection: hearing from a role model, meeting someone from a different career path, or being encouraged to think differently about the future.
Last year, Urban Synergy delivered 70 events in schools, reaching 9,513 students.
That early engagement matters because it helps young people see more options before key decisions are made.
It brings careers, confidence, and opportunity into familiar spaces - and creates a bridge between education and the wider world of work.

Urban Synergy Mentees are up and in early today for a 9.30 start! this marks the start of our Two day Talent Accelerator Class at the London Stock Exchange in Central London.
