“We’ve long called for urgent and decisive action to end rough sleeping, and we wholeheartedly welcome Andy Burnham’s commitment to offer a route off the streets for everyone sleeping rough by Christmas.”

Today’s announcement marks a pivotal moment: an acknowledgement from the highest level of political leadership that rough sleeping should not exist, and a decisive step forward to end it once and for all.

St Mungo’s CEO, Emma Haddad, responds today's announcement from the Prime Minister.

Homelessness can happen to anyone.

There's no single cause of homelessness. It can happen after losing a job, fleeing abuse, a relationship breaking down, poor health, or because there's simply nowhere safe to go.

Whatever the reason, we're here. 🧡

“Knowing I had the help of St Mungo’s took away the fear of the unknown of ‘Where am I going to go?’ ‘What am I going to do?’”

St Mungo’s volunteer and client, Lee, had a chat with Shay Kaur Grewal on BBC Radio London last week, sharing their experiences of homelessness, Lee’s story and St Mungo’s ‘I Was Here’ campaign.

Shay was also joined by Service Development Manager, Elle Slater, who spoke about the campaign alongside the importance of providing the right support to allow people to rebuild their lives from homelessness.

🗣️ “I first became homeless in 2013 when my mum passed away. St Mungo’s introduced themselves to me when I was rough sleeping for what felt like 100 years, but it was about 10 months.”

Sleeping rough left Bilal feeling vulnerable, constantly on alert and unsure what each day would bring.

🧡 After meeting St Mungo’s, Bilal was supported into emergency accommodation before spending the next few years rebuilding his life with the help of our teams.

“The team are real, genuine people who want to help – they treat you like you’d treat a friend and I trust them.”

🏠 Bilal knows that recovery is a journey. Today he's living in his own flat and volunteers at a local foodbank - giving back to others while building a brighter future of his own.
