What the RCGP does

We are the professional membership body and guardian of standards for family doctors in the UK, working to promote excellence in primary healthcare. A voice for GPs and patients

We speak up for standards in primary care. Acting as a voice for primary care practitioners and their patients, we:
•play a leading role in the formation of policy in key areas like GP Revalidation and

appraisal
•produce position papers to inform debate
•take part in consultations issued by government and other organisations. Policy

**GP training and development

We work to improve GP education and training, defining standards through the GP Curriculum and upholding them through our MRCGP membership exam. We provide continued support, with a comprehensive range of courses, events and resources to help GPs keep their knowledge and skills up to date.

**Research in primary care

At the RCGP we define research as systematic investigation that results in new conclusions. Whilst not a research organisation, the RCGP recognises the key role that research plays in advancing the highest quality of care for patients. High quality research and objective evidence is vital to policy and clinical decision-making and underpins the best possible care for patients. The RCGP Research Programme works in a number of ways to help ensure robust evidence remains at the heart of what we do. Visit: www.rcgp.org.uk/representing-you/research-at-rcgp

**Publications

We publish the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP), globally distributed to family practitioners and primary care researchers. BJGP is a leading source of research, debate, and analysis in general practice and primary care, becoming the field’s second most highly cited journal world-wide. Visit: www.rcgp.org.uk/bjgp

**International

We are committed to promoting excellence in primary healthcare around the world, working with overseas colleagues through our successful international development programme.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating our RCGP Advocates.

Our advocates generously give their time, skills and experience to help shape the College and support our charitable objectives.

From influencing policy and joining College boards to speaking at events and creating content, they help drive meaningful change across general practice.

With 1,200+ GPs involved, this is a community making a real difference.

To our advocates, thank you! 💙

Being an advocate has helped me realise that we don’t have to just sit on the sidelines. We can actually be part of the conversation.'

This Volunteers’ Week, hear from RCGP Advocates on why they volunteer their time to support general practice, their colleagues and their communities.

From mentoring and leadership to women’s health, education and local events, our Advocates are helping shape the future of the profession while supporting GPs at every stage of their career.
Their stories are a reminder that advocacy is about more than volunteering, it’s about connection, purpose and creating meaningful change together.

Thank you to all our Advocates for the passion, expertise and kindness you bring to the College and the profession every day. 💙

Your College – working for you 👇

✅ We appeared in the Financial Times and other national outlets on Government plans to reform fit notes, stressing that changes to the system must put patients first and avoid increasing GP workload.

✅ Our Chair Victoria featured on BBC News responding to the Health and Social Care Committee’s report on healthy ageing, highlighting the need to support GPs to deliver preventive care.

Are you a GP interested in research delivery?

Then this advice from Dr Uwa Ima-Edomwonyi, GP at Donneybrook Medical Centre in Greater Manchester, is for you. ⬇️

1. Link up with other colleagues who are already in research and learn from their experiences
2. Complete your GCP training on NIHR Learn
3. Build support with your practice colleagues. Assign a Research Lead within the practice, in our case I took on the role, and continue to encourage staff to engage with research activities
4. Finally, 100% reach out to your Regional Research Delivery Network. You just need to email them and they're really, really helpful, super supportive and they'll hold your hand through it all.

If you want to know more about getting started in research delivery within general practice, visit our website and read Uwa’s brilliant blog.
