Funding opportunity from Hackney Giving 💚

Hackney Giving is offering microgrants of up to £1,000 to not-for-profit groups with a turnover of under £300,000.

There are two strands:
• Community Grants – supporting health and wellbeing, reducing social isolation and strengthening communities.
• Helping People Understand Health Information – supporting people to find, understand and act on reliable health information.

Projects can run for as long as you need, depending on what you want to do.

Could your community be eligible for Grassroots Grants?

Groundwork London is working with Postcode Lottery UK for a third year to offer up to £2,000 in unrestricted funding to 700 small, local organisations across England.

Priority will be given to organisations working in communities within the 15% most deprived neighbourhoods in England, as well as organisations supporting marginalised or vulnerable communities.

Not sure if your community falls within the top 15%?

The English Indices of Deprivation rank neighbourhoods from 1 (most deprived) to 32,844 (least deprived). A rank of 4,927 or lower falls within the 15% most deprived.

Grassroots Grants can support work across arts, green spaces, poverty, mental health, and tackling inequality.

Thank you to everyone who registered their interest in the NHS Race & Health Observatory Community Grant Programme Pilot.

We’ve heard from organisations across the country doing brilliant, grassroots work with communities most affected by racial and ethnic inequalities in health.

This week, we’re letting organisations know whether they’ve been invited to submit a full application.

But registering your interest is just the beginning.

Over the year, we’ll bring organisations together through capacity-building events, workshops and networking sessions — open to everyone who registered, whether or not they’ve been invited to submit a full application for a small grant.

It’s a chance to connect, share learning and help shape what this pilot can teach us about making health inequality funding, policy and services more equitable.

A creative practitioner’s perspective on The Wake

Freelance creative practitioner Simran Sehmbi shares her experience of taking part in The Wake Youth Engagement Pilot.

Working alongside nine other young people, Simran helped develop and deliver a youth consultation exploring themes including history, migration, identity and belonging.

After a decade-long campaign, Friends of the Joiners Arms are getting closer to opening The Joiners Heart: London’s newest community-run, wheelchair-accessible LGBTQIA+ pub and performance venue.

This will be a space for socialising, community, performance and employment — and, most importantly, celebrating q***r joy. ❤️

🎭 Interested in what happens behind the scenes at live events?

If you’re the person everyone turns to when the TV needs fixing, or you’re curious about how live shows come together, this could be for you.

The Future Technicians Programme is offering 16 free training places for Waltham Forest residents aged 18–30, with a paid week-long placement for participants who complete the training.

You’ll get hands-on experience in:
🔧 Rigging lights for live shows
🎛️ Operating sound and lighting desks
🎭 Looking after a professional working stage

📍 Free training at Camden People’s Theatre
📅 Training: 21 September–2 October 2026
💷 Paid placement: £592 for the week, at London Living Wage

Travel costs for the training week can be reimbursed if they’re a barrier.

💻 This happened last week in Portfolio!

Our free creative summer programme for 16–25‑year‑olds in Redbridge is officially underway, and our 25 amazing participants have started building their own digital portfolios. With mentors guiding them through masterclasses, development labs and inspiring trips, they’re exploring creative mediums like DJing, concept art and film making.

They’ll showcase their work this September at East Bank, Stratford and we can’t wait to see what they create!
