Across every continent, hydropower companies are keeping the lights on with secure, clean and reliable energy and having a positive impact in areas that go beyond their core business.

IHA has compiled examples from our members' reports to offer a snapshot of the wider work the organisations have done to positively impact the communities in which they operate.

We're talking about:

🌳 A 20-year conservation mission to help an endangered tree species bloom again in China

🦅 Active protection programmes for five threatened species across five Indian states

🎓 Funding hands-on STEM education for students living near Australia's energy infrastructure

⚽ Supporting over 820,000 female athletes across Spain — helping professionalize women's sport

🌾 Helping Brazilian farmers cut cereal production costs by 32% while absorbing more carbon than they emit

🩸 Getting 1,500 girls back into school in Uganda by tackling menstrual hygiene barriers

These companies aren't just operators of critical infrastructure. They are long-term neighbours investing in the communities, ecosystems, and people around them.

Hydropower is keeping lights on in New York City! 🌆

Buried underneath the bustling city is a new, 339-mile transmission line, suppling NYC with electricity from its Canadian neighbour, Hydro-Québec.

Officially receiving its first deliveries of electricity this week, the supply of renewable electricity will replace a significant share of generation from thermal power plants and power over 1 million homes. 🏠

It is expected to avoid approximately 4 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually (the equivalent of taking more than 500,000 vehicles off the road).

This has become the longest HVDC underground and underwater power cable in North America. With a transmission capacity of 1,250 megawatts, the line represents a major infrastructure asset for energy exchanges between HQ and Transmission Developers Inc.

IHA is proud to announce that it is incorporating the Women in Hydropower Mentorship Program under its organisation.

With women representing approximately 25% of the hydropower workforce, structured support and connection matter more than ever. Since its founding in 2017 by Nora Rosemore, the WHMP has grown into a global initiative providing mentorship to around 200 participants per year across more than 40 countries, powered entirely by volunteers.

By bringing the WHMP under IHA's umbrella, the program gains access to IHA's international reach, dedicated staff resources, and the infrastructure to ensure its long-term future.

A heartfelt thank you to Kleinschmidt Associates for their years of dedicated support in building the WHMP into the thriving program it is today.

📢 Applications for the 2026/27 cohort are now open! Whether you're ready to give back as a mentor or looking for guidance as a mentee, we encourage you to apply and become part of this global network.

Energy isn't just a climate story anymore. It's a security story.

As the global order fragments, middle powers are rethinking everything from trade exposure to security alliances, and above all, their dependence on imported fuels.

Bloomberg's Global Head of Strategy Kobad Bhavnagri joined Malcolm Turnbull, IHA President and former Prime Minister of Australia, live at the 2026 BNEF Summit New York for a conversation about what this shift really means.

What is being talked about at ?

IHA President and Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull joined Kobad Bhavnagri, Global Head of Strategy on stage at Bloomberg NEF to discuss the shifting geopolitical landscape.

As a growing number of middle powers pursue clean energy not merely as a climate commitment, but as a strategic imperative driven by economic resilience, energy security, and the desire for greater autonomy.

Turnbull explored how these nations are navigating an increasingly complex environment: great power competition, rising conflict, and conflicting signals from the United States, all while advancing transition pathways that serve their own national interests.

One of the most reliable ways for a country to achieve that autonomy is to invest in domestic energy. By harnessing homegrown resources like solar, wind, hydropower, nations reduce their exposure to volatile global energy markets and strengthen their long-term security. These technologies are proven, rapidly scalable, and increasingly cost-competitive.

But generation alone is not enough.

Pairing renewables with adequate long-duration storage is what enables countries to maintain a stable, flexible grid, providing the reliability and ancillary services needed to support full energy independence.

🌍 Happy Earth Day! Celebrating our power

Hydropower is one of our oldest and most reliable tools for a sustainable future, powering almost 15% of global electricity with a minimal carbon footprint. Hydropower is continuously modernising to work in better harmony with nature, while providing reliable, flexible, clean energy.

By embracing fish-friendly tech and community-centered development, we’re ensuring the rivers that power our cities also sustain our ecosystems.

As signatories of the San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower, IHA members are leading this evolution. Here’s how:

🐟 Natel Energy: Developing high-performance, fish-safe turbines
📈 Hydrogrid: Leveraging data to maximise water-use efficiency
🏔️ Statkraft: Modernising plants and restoring landscapes in Norway.
💧 EDF: Implementing smart flow management to protect downstream habitats.
🌤️ Sarawak Energy Berhad(As Known As SESCO): Integrating floating solar with hydropower to maximise renewable sources.
🪴 Serengeti Energy: Their Nyamwamba River Watershed has improved water quality and quantity and enhanced crop yields in the community.

This , we celebrate a future where clean water and clean energy go hand in hand. 💧⚡️

Renewables overtake natural gas in US power generation for first time according to new Ember research! ⚡ 🌊 🌤️

Solar, wind, hydropower and bioenergy became the largest source of US electricity in March, supplying almost half of the generation.

Despite this progress, rising electricity demand is complicating the transition. Solar, wind and batteries are expected to account for 93% of new power capacity added this year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

But perhaps more impressive is that renewables are growing their market share while overall electricity demand climbs. Put simply, clean energy is taking a bigger slice of a growing pie.

Even as the current administration has not provided a favourable environment to build more renewables, a key pair of facts will hold: The U.S. needs more electricity, and renewables are the easiest way to get it. In other words, don’t expect this to be the last month in which renewables conquer gas.

Our delegation paid a visit to the IHA Office today in Beijing 🇨🇳👋🏽

They were welcomed by State Grid Xinyuan, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) and CSHE for meetings across the Chinese capital focusing on hydropower development in China and IHA’s strategy within the region.

💭 Did you know, according to the World Hydropower Outlook, China added 14.4 GW of new conventional hydropower capacity in 2024, including 7.75 GW of pumped storage?

With more than 200 GW of pumped storage under construction or approved, China is on track to exceed its 2030 target of 120 GW, potentially reaching 130 GW by the end of the decade 🔋
