A few of our favourite moments from the launch of Scéalta: Our Stories

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Railway Club to celebrate this special project.

From a trunk filled with memorabilia from years gone by to live music and a wonderful performance by Sean from Murchu Duiginn School of Irish Dancing, it was a lovely afternoon celebrating the stories of Brent's Irish community.

We knew our recent oral-history project Scéalta - Our Stories meant a lot to people, but almost as much as Mayo winning the All-Ireland? That's high praise indeed!

"Just to say my aunt, Theresa, almost enjoyed getting a copy of Scéalta as much as Mayo winning the All-Ireland – she's from Kiltimagh in County Mayo."

We can't promise Scéalta is better than the Sam Maguire Cup, but we'll happily take "almost"! 😄

Our Volunteer Manager Marie, who co-ran the Scéalta project, shares a little about how it came together and our wonderful book launch at the weekend.

Scéalta – Our Stories captures the memories and experiences of Irish people who came to Brent in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, preserving their stories for generations to come.

Written and designed in-house by BIAS, with stories from our community at its heart.

We were delighted to attend the farewell reception for Irish Ambassador Martin and Deirdre Fraser.

Our CEO, Mike McGing, and Vice Chair, Mairead Liston, attended the reception to celebrate Martin and Deirdre's contribution to the Irish community in the UK over the past four years.

We were especially pleased to welcome Deirdre to one of our Brent clubs earlier this year, where she met our members and saw first-hand the work we do to support older people in the Irish community.

Thank you, Martin and Deirdre, for your support of BIAS and the wider Irish community. We wish you both every success and happiness in your new chapter in the United States ☘️

A huge congratulations to our former trustee and one of our founding members, Dónal MacCraith, on being named Runner-Up in the Trustee Award category at the Volunteer Awards

Dónal helped found BIAS in 1978 and has spent almost 50 years supporting the Irish community in Brent. From helping people access advice and support to guiding the charity as a trustee, he has played a huge part in making BIAS what it is today.

Congratulations, Dónal, and thank you for everything you have done for BIAS and our community

We were delighted to welcome Deirdre Fraser, wife of Martin Fraser, the Irish Ambassador to the UK, to one of our Active Ageing Clubs last Thursday.

Deirdre spent time chatting with members, joining in with the raffle and experiencing the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes our Active Ageing Clubs so special. Despite the heat, more than 50 people came along to enjoy music, dancing, bingo and great company.

It was a pleasure to share a little of what BIAS is all about and the important role our clubs play in bringing people together each week.

Thank you, Deirdre, for taking the time to visit us, and thank you to all of our members and volunteers who made it such a wonderful afternoon.

Alongside our regular weekly clubs, we also have live music, social events and day trips planned throughout June and July.

New members are always welcome, and there is no need to book for our weekly clubs – just come along and join us.
