Today, ADCU proudly joined forces with the Brent Green Party and the Pull the Plug on Waymo campaign for our second joint protest against the rollout of driverless cars outside Waymo's Park Royal site.

A huge thank you to all our members, fellow drivers, trade unionists, campaigners, and local residents who came along to show their support. Your presence sent a clear message that the future of professional drivers cannot be decided without the workers whose livelihoods are at stake.

Thousands of private hire drivers are already facing falling earnings, insecure work, and unfair treatment. The rollout of autonomous vehicles without proper safeguards risks making these challenges even worse.

TECHNOLOGY SHOULD SUPPORT WORKERS, NOT REPLACE THEM.

ADCU will continue to campaign for meaningful consultation, strong legal protections, public accountability, and a fair transition for drivers.

Together, we will continue to stand up for drivers' jobs, livelihoods, and the future of our profession.

Transport for London: ISSUE TEMPORARY LICENCES NOW TO DRIVERS TRAPPED IN "OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH" DELAYS

Just four days ago, Sadiq Khan Mayor of London claimed TfL’s taxi and private hire licensing service had “largely recovered” from the September 2024 cyber incident.

Tell that to the drivers still stuck in the so-called occupational health backlog.

Many ADCU members have now been waiting weeks and even months for their licences to be renewed. Some have already been declared fit to drive but were still pushed into occupational health and left there.

One of them is Kola Oba, ADCU’s London Branch Equality Representative. Kola applied for renewal months ago, in good time, and did everything required of him. He has been passed fit to drive, but was wrongly treated as an occupational health case because he has an athletic heart rate - exactly what you would expect from a former professional basketball player.

His licence expires today.

That means he cannot work at all.

No income.
No money for the mortgage.
No money for food or bills.
And no way to keep up the rental payments on the car he needs to earn a living.

If TfL does not act immediately, Kola will not just lose work - he could lose the very vehicle that allows him to support himself and his family.

This is not an isolated case. Drivers are being pushed into crisis by delays they did not cause, in a system they did everything right to comply with.

ADCU is calling on TfL to issue temporary licences immediately to every driver still waiting because of occupational health delays.

These are not paperwork problems. These are people’s livelihoods. TfL press lines about having things “under control” will not pay the rent, put food on the table, or stop drivers being pushed into desperation.

Issue the temporary licences. Now.

Thank you Caroline Russell London Assembly for holding Transport for London to account on autonomous vehicles and highlighting that this has to be a devolved government issue, because of the multiple potential impacts on the capital's drivers, passengers, streets, traffic congestion levels, and economy, and, as TFL has conceded, its duties under the Autonomous Vehicles Act 2024. ADCU highlighted this in our submission to the Assembly earlier this year and now they have listened, so must UK Government. Welcome news in the Evening Standard that the points we made at the London Assembly in May about driverless cars being untested technology and potentially cutting across the Sadiq Khan Mayor of London Transport Strategy are finally being listened to. It's far too soon to be trialling these vehicles until the impacts on about safety, accessibility and job losses are fully assessed.
