Thanks so much to Hannah Spencer MP for joining us at the Mass Lobby for Migrant Rights on Wednesday, uniting with us in our call to stop the earned settlement proposals.

In her speech, she said: “There are problems with the way migration is managed but we can fix this without demonising people. We need a more sensible approach to migration, one that puts people first and puts our shared humanity at its centre.”

The by-election in Gorton & Denton shows something powerful: Communities are pushing back against politics built on division and hostility.

Now we must do the same in Westminster.

On 11th March, we’re uniting with grassroots groups, unions and allies from across the country to tell MPs loud and clear: we must oppose the harmful earned settlement plans.

Shabana Mahmood’s proposed changes are not only a disaster for migrant communities and damaging for the UK economy - they are deeply unpopular. Labour has just a few short weeks to reassess their approach.

Breaking News: Keir Starmer Discovers Racism

This week Prime Minister Keir Starmer warned us that racism is “returning to politics”. We have to ask, return from where? Because it never left, especially under his own policies.

You can’t practise exclusion one day and preach compassion the next.

The Government has a responsibility to make sure no child goes hungry. Not just those with British passports.⁠
⁠
Right now, a massive 46% of migrant children live in poverty, almost DOUBLE the rate for other children. A huge number of those children will undoubtedly have parents who are impacted by No Recourse to Public Funds.⁠
⁠
Parents like Favour who, while pregnant, was told that she and her two children would be kicked out because she couldn't pay the rent. ⁠
⁠
“It was a difficult moment. I felt my whole world was coming to an end. But I had to be strong for my children.”⁠
⁠
Thankfully, we were able to secure a change of conditions so that Favour could access child benefit and housing support.⁠
⁠
“Children shouldn’t be punished for their parent’s immigration status. My children were born here. They should have access to benefits. Children are suffering. Adults can manage, but don’t deny children their rights.”⁠
⁠
We're still pushing the Government to protect EVERY child from poverty, including Favour's. That means scrapping No Recourse to Public Funds so that every family has access to the welfare safety net when they really need it.⁠

What we really need a 'nationwide blitz' on...

➡️Hostile policies like banning people seeking asylum from working.
➡️Poor decision-making from the Home Office meaning that people have to wait longer for a decision on their application.
➡️Politicians exposing the locations of Home Office accommodation a year after racist riots in a desperate attempt to grab headlines.
➡️Harmful language about people seeking asylum that stokes division and risks further violence.

Happy Refugee Week! Get to know the Praxis community better through photography exhibitions this Refugee Week.

The portraits are the result of artist-led workshops where Praxis community members brought in an object that linked to their heritage or life in London and shared about its importance. Launching on Wednesday, they will be on public display at the Royal Docks alongside audio recordings from participants.
