Those of you who know me, know how passionate I am about spreading awareness and trying to work with communities on safeguarding against domestic abuse

Last year, in April 2022, my heart broke when Kenya lost a young woman in her 20s, a mother of 3 children, 2 of them were barely 50 days old twins

I vowed to try and make a difference and I knew my work was cut out in a country like Kenya. Here in the UK, I know the services inside and out and never run out of things to talk about. In Kenya, they do not have even half of the services we have here. My aim was to create the awareness and going forward encourage communities on responding to domestic abuse better using the resources they have.

I have to say, Kenya welcomed me with open arms, their hearts and minds ready to receive the expertise I had to share. So now the seed has been sown! I'm sure the people I shared with in Kenya will take my work forward and I will be forever grateful that I was given this opportunity to spread awareness on Domestic Abuse

To summarise, in less than a month I completed two radio interviews with Kenya's East FM and Radio 44, I was interviewed by Asian Weekly, I spoke at an in person event that had attendance from Kenya's Hindu Council Chair Person and I met with the community with whom my awareness work started with.

Dear Vanita, it's been a while since I posted about you. 18 months when your life was taken so brutally and tragically.

18 months ago I penned a post as an outcry and a need for us all to re-think how domestic abuse is responded to in our communities in Nairobi

18 months later, today I'm posting you again. This time in colour, to show your true beauty and value.

Yesterday I visited the place where you lost your life and I felt the deepest sense of sadness but a strong reminder of why my purpose in life is prevention of domestic abuse.

Yesterday I met the sisters in your community, each one with something to offer, each one a warrior in her own right, each one willing to join hands with me so that lives like yours stand a chance of survival.

Dear Vanita, justice looks different for you today, justice looks the winds of change. No, infact a storm that's coming to ensure your life wasn't lost in vain

Dear Vanita may your beautiful soul rest in peace knowing that your demise sparked a flame that has set people's conscience on fire

Dear Vanita let us not forget your name! Ever!

An absolute honour to be sharing airspace with the one and only The Rush DJ on Kenya's we will be discussing the emotive subject of Domestic Abuse from a male perspective.

Men deserve to be included in conversations about domestic abuse

Men also deserve to have their experiences of abuse shared

Men deserve as much support and solidarity as women suffering domestic abuse

And lastly, Men have a huge role to play in the prevention of domestic abuse

In all the years I've had my Muslim sisters by my side, if there is one thing I have learnt it's that wearing a Hijab is a choice. Not wearing a Hijab is also a choice. is not a debate on the Hijab itself but a woman's right to exercise her choice! Yet another life lost to

When will it stop?

VANITA SENGHANI

SAY HER NAME, SAY IT LOUD, SAY IT AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL PEOPLE SIT UP AND LISTEN!!!

My soul hurts, the fact that this beautiful woman lost her life. It's still unclear if she took her own life or it was taken from her.

What we do know she was subjected to financial abuse. We do know that she was subjected to emotional and psychological abuse. Is this really how we want to respond to Domestic Abuse???

In a country like Kenya where there are very few support services in place, in my opinion our communities need to step and provide support to vulnerable and high risk members of our community.

We have entire communities that have money, resources and people power and this is demonstrated in all the lavish events we see year in year out.

Yet why is it that our local communities are still unable to support the vulnerable in a better way?? Here's what I think communities need to focus on

➡️ EDUCATE yourselves on what Domestic Abuse is

➡️ THINK hard about the profound impact all types of abuse has on not just the victim but the entire community

➡️ REFLECT on how we can change mindsets around the subject, break the taboos, welcome open conversations about what exactly is putting up a barrier between victims and help from their communities

➡️CREATE a safe space for your community members to have confidential, supportive and non judgemental conversations about their experiences.

➡️ EXPLORE your resources, what can you offer in terms of moral, emotional and practical support

➡️ IMPLEMENT change, stop making excuses and defending abusive behaviours, stop normalising and minimising psychological abuse as being ordinary relationship issues

➡️CHANGE!! Change starts at home, it starts with you, it starts with exploring your privilege and why we've adopted an 'it's not my daughter' policy and turned a blind eye

Is it so hard for our communities to simply accept that we might not have been handling Domestic Abuse cases too well until now?

Is it so hard to be open minded and want to change??

Beautiful feedback from a volunteer for Sikh Helpline who attended our Domestic Abuse training course! This feedback deserved a post of it's own!

When the subject is emotive, it is inevitable that tears will flow, and as we created a safe space for our delegates to share their feelings, we saw week by week progress of how much change was created in our group. Each time we burn into ashes from the pain of our emotions we come back stronger and rising to empower others is the biggest Seva (Service) one can ever do in life

3 years ago and I embarked on a journey, to change the way we respond to Domestic Abuse, socially, culturally and professionally

In the last 3 months we have have had the honour of working with delegates from and train them as Domestic Abuse First Aiders

We designed a holistic course that covered:

1. What Domestic Abuse is
2. Understanding its impact
3. Understanding the professional infrastructure of help available in the UK
4. Understanding the ways in which we can all support victims of Domestic Abuse

Our training style is trauma informed which means we were able to work with our delegates in a therapeutic and compassionate way whilst providing experiential learning that challenges stereotypical and unconscious beliefs around the subject of Domestic Abuse

I thank Ritu Sharma for having us as your guest trainers and look forward to more partnership working with your wonderful and empowering organisation
