Midweek reflections from Monday’s ABC session at Loughborough Primary School 📚✨

This week’s session was once again led by the brilliant Young Reading Leaders from , who continue to demonstrate excellent leadership, encouragement, and commitment whilst supporting pupils throughout the afternoon.

For the past three years, we have built a strong and valued partnership with Loughborough Primary School through the consistent delivery of our ABC sessions, creating engaging literacy spaces that promote reading confidence, communication, vocabulary development, and meaningful discussion.

On Mondays, the Young Reading Leaders work across two different year groups, with this particular group being Year 2 pupils. It continues to be incredibly rewarding watching the younger pupils grow in confidence each week whilst also seeing the Young Reading Leaders strengthen their own leadership, facilitation, and communication skills through peer-led delivery.

From reading alongside pupils to supporting discussions around the text, the sessions continue to reflect the positive impact of collaboration, consistency, and youth leadership within literacy intervention spaces 👏🏾📖

We are extremely proud of the partnership between both schools and the positive environment that continues to be created every Monday afternoon. PeerLearning

Tuesdays are for Archbishop Sumner 📚✨

This week’s ABC session focused on guided reading, vocabulary exploration, comprehension, and paired discussion activities, creating a calm and engaging space for pupils to strengthen both their reading skills and confidence.

Throughout the session, pupils demonstrated excellent focus, participation, and engagement with the text, working collaboratively to build understanding and develop confidence in reading aloud. Pupils were encouraged to reflect on language, interpret meaning, and share their thoughts during discussion activities linked to the text.

One of the most encouraging aspects of the session was witnessing pupils naturally support one another during reading tasks. From helping peers work through unfamiliar words to encouraging each other during discussions, the session reflected the importance of creating literacy spaces that promote both learning and peer support.

It was great to see pupils becoming increasingly confident in expressing their thoughts, analysing the text, and engaging in meaningful discussion throughout the afternoon 👏🏾

Fridays are for reading, reflection, critical thinking, and meaningful discussion 📚✨

Today’s ABC: Achieving Beyond Capabilities session at HillMead Primary School focused on key areas of literacy development including reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary development, communication, confidence in reading aloud, emotional reflection, and critical thinking through To and Fro by Anton Clifford-Motopi.

Throughout the session, pupils engaged in independent reading, paired discussion, vocabulary exploration, and reflective conversations around the themes, emotions, and experiences presented within the text. Pupils were encouraged to analyse language, interpret meaning, discuss character emotions, and confidently share their perspectives with the wider group. It was incredibly encouraging to witness the level of focus, maturity, participation, and engagement demonstrated across the session.

One particularly impactful moment came during discussion, where a pupil confidently articulated their understanding of PTSD and its impact on individuals. Moments such as these reinforce the importance of creating literacy spaces where young people are encouraged to think critically, engage with deeper themes, express themselves confidently, and connect literature to wider real-world experiences and emotions.

At Exceed Reading Stars, our ABC programme supports children and young people through targeted small-group literacy interventions designed to strengthen comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, communication, confidence, and reading for pleasure, whilst also creating safe and engaging spaces for discussion, reflection, and personal development 📖

A special thank you to Round Table Books for supplying the books used during today’s session, and to the manager for the thoughtful recommendations and continued support in helping us select texts that encourage meaningful reflection and discussion amongst young people ✨

Another impactful session and continued positive engagement from the pupils throughout👏🏿

ERS Spring Stars: Learn, Move & Create 🌱

Over the Easter break, Exceed Reading Stars proudly delivered our Spring HAF Programme in Lambeth, bringing our Learn, Move & Create theme to life through engaging, active, and creative experiences.

Across 4 days of delivery (4 hours per day), we supported 20–22 young people daily, reaching approximately 80–88 attendances, while providing over 80 meals to ensure every child was fuelled and ready to take part.

A key highlight of the programme was that sessions were co-managed by our Youth Stars, young leaders who sit on our board. Their involvement reflects our commitment to being a youth-led organisation, creating meaningful opportunities for leadership, responsibility, and peer-led engagement.

Each day was designed to balance learning, movement, and creativity, with highlights including:

• High-energy fun at Sobell Leisure Centre Trampoline Park (Move)

• A Southbank Landmarks Quest followed by an Easter Egg Hunt (Learn & Create)

• A cinema trip to watch Super Mario to celebrate the end of the programme

From teamwork activities to outdoor exploration and shared experiences, young people built confidence, developed social skills, and engaged in meaningful learning beyond the classroom.

A powerful week of learning, movement, and creativity in action, led with and for young people.

More moments from an unforgettable day.

Young people from Exceed Reading Stars leading a literacy session inside the House of Parliament, facilitating discussion, guiding vocabulary exploration, and confidently engaging a room of educators and policymakers.

These photographs capture something powerful: young people not simply participating in conversations about education, but actively leading them.

For the pupils who joined us from two partner primary schools, it was also an opportunity to witness what youth leadership through literacy can look like in practice.

Moments like this remind us why this work matters!

After some time away from this page, we return with an important milestone for Exceed Reading Stars.

While this page has been quiet, our work across schools and communities has continued, supporting children and young people to strengthen their reading, build confidence and develop leadership through literacy.

As part of the Year of Reading 2026, young people from Exceed Reading Stars facilitated a youth-led literacy session inside the House of Commons.

Hosted by Helen Hayes MP, Chair of the House of Commons Education Select Committee, the event brought together educators, policymakers and partners to experience how youth leadership and structured literacy practice can support reading engagement.

During the session, our Young Reading Leaders guided participants through shared reading, vocabulary exploration and discussion , demonstrating the same literacy approach delivered through our programmes with children and young people.

Pupils from two partner primary schools also attended, witnessing young people confidently lead a national conversation about literacy.

This moment reflects the power of youth leadership and the impact of literacy in building confidence, voice and opportunity.

And for Exceed Reading Stars, this is only the beginning. More moments will be shared soon!

Exceed Reading Stars
Christmas Experience✨

This year has been a trying year, but with determination, we pulled through and achieved so much so far. Exceed Reading Stars is planning to end 2021 with a bang! This Christmas, we have prepared an exciting week for our youth to celebrate this year’s Christmas holiday, themed around a cosy winter vibe to counteract the cold season.

We want to present to you the “Exceed Reading Stars Christmas Experience!”. This is our way of treating children and young people of Lambeth this Christmas with a week of festive fun, creative and hands-on activities, baking and cooking, and new experiences London has to offer for our young people.

Participants will get to choose which site they would like to attend and which activity they would like to indulge in. For example, on Tuesday we are holding our sessions in two sites doing two completely different sets of activities. They have the choice between Clapham (doing one of the listed activities) or Moorlands (doing either arts and crafts or storytelling).
