Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said:

“The government’s focus on improving access to trusted news and promoting public service media is welcome [...] However, these proposals follow the announcement of brutal cuts at STV and the BBC, where thousands of jobs and programmes are at risk of being lost. To safeguard access to accurate, high-quality news and information, the government must urgently intervene to protect jobs and the future of public service media.”

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has launched a consultation on plans to improve access to trusted news.

The NUJ has joined the IFJ in condemning the continued targeting of journalists by Israeli forces in both Palestine and Lebanon and calling for urgent independent investigations.

Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said: "Civilians, including journalists, are entitled to protection under the Geneva Convention, and these attacks clearly violate international law."

During a debate in Westminster earlier this month, John McDonnell, MP for Hayes and Harlington and NUJ parliamentary group secretary, urged the UK government to join other nations in collecting evidence of war crimes committed by Israeli forces.

The NUJ has joined the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) and the Union of Journalists of Lebanon (UJL) in condemning continued targeted attacks on journalists in Palestine and Lebanon by Israeli forces.

"The Scottish Parliament was founded on the principles of openness and accountability, so it is inexplicable that the Presiding Officer has made a decision that restricts legitimate scrutiny. Journalists have a duty to question elected representatives and the people of Scotland deserve to hear their answers," said Nick McGowan-Lowe, NUJ Scotland national organiser.

"I have written to the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body today to call for this decision to be overturned immediately, and for any proposals affecting journalists' right to report on parliamentary business to be properly discussed with journalists' organisations in advance."

The NUJ has said that the sudden decision to physically restrict journalists and prevent them questioning parliamentarians at Holyrood should be overturned.

Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said:

“This constant cycle of cuts and cost-saving must end [...] The BBC cannot provide quality journalism without the talented and experienced workers who make it possible.”

The NUJ has warned that further brutal BBC cuts will be “devastating” for workers and audiences, urging management and the government to prioritise investing in the broadcaster.

Séamus Dooley, NUJ assistant general secretary, said:

“Masked men have no right to direct or control the media. It is the function of journalists to record news - that includes covering riots [...] There is no place for fear, intimidation or harassment.”

The NUJ has strongly condemned threats, intimidation, and attacks against reporters covering riots in Belfast in recent days, and has repeated calls for further action to protect journalists.
