"Abuse should never be tolerated as part of the job and the union welcomes the police’s call for journalists to report incidents, threats or crimes linked to their work," said Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary.

“We urge any member who experiences threats and intimidation to also contact the union’s Irish office, and encourage all journalists to document incidents of abuse using our Journalists' Safety Tracker.”

The NUJ has expressed concern at reports of criminal damage and threats against a journalist in Belfast, and welcomed the police's call for journalists not to tolerate abuse in the course of their work.

“Ultimately this unfortunate turn of events was allowed to develop because the Irish government has failed to properly address the funding of public service broadcasting in Ireland," said Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary. "The work of the Future of Media Commission needs to be considered once again to ensure a secure and predictable funding programme for RTÉ and TG4.”

The NUJ has welcomed news of a “positive meeting” between the Irish government and RTÉ on the public service broadcaster’s funding.

"RTÉ provides a vital public service, including holding government to account, but now finds itself in a seriously regressive position where yet again it faces financial uncertainty - which in turn causes stress and anxiety for our members," said Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary.

"We urge the government to reconsider its decision and reform RTÉ’s funding model to secure the long-term future of Ireland’s national broadcaster.”

The NUJ has strongly condemned the Irish government’s decision to cut funding to RTÉ, reneging on its commitment to provide multi-annual funding to the public service broadcaster.

Anthony Bellanger, IFJ general secretary, said:

“Our brave colleagues were arrested for one reason only: doing their job of informing citizens about the truth. They were helping to protect the public information space from misinformation, disinformation and propaganda. They are a perfect example of journalism as a public good. On behalf of the global community of journalists and their unions, I call on the Egyptian authorities to release them immediately."

The NUJ has joined the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and Egyptian Journalists’ Syndicate (EJS) in calling for Egyptian authorities to immediately release six journalists from the fact-checking outlet Matsada2sh.

The NUJ Guardian chapel has welcomed the abolition of a ‘two-status’ workforce and the ‘stand down’ practice that required casuals to have a non-working month each year. As a result of the chapel's talks with management, the number of roles created has increased from the original proposals, and greater functional specialisation among new 'rota-shortfall' staff has been agreed.

However concerns remain that new roles will be insufficient to cover the work currently undertaken by casuals. The union will closely monitor implementation and urges deeper engagement.

"Changes to freelance and casual terms must be negotiated between the paper's NUJ chapel and its management and the union is determined to ensure that any reforms deliver on its priorities - equal treatment for all, an end to stand down, and secure jobs for as many as want them. Some agreement on these points already exists, but the details are vital."

The Guardian announced last month that it would no longer use casual staff, ending a practice that has existed for several decades.

“This is a major victory for journalists and journalism - and a testament to the persistence of our members and officials who have worked tenaciously over many years to achieve this outcome. The police cannot impede journalists in their work and the NUJ will closely monitor the situation as we continue to engage with the government and police bodies to ensure our members can carry on doing their jobs without fear of obstruction or victimisation.”

The NUJ has welcomed confirmation from the Metropolitan Police that they no longer retain data relating to the journalists at the centre of a lengthy legal challenge over the collection and use of information held on police databases.

Journalists have a right to protect their sources and to report without fear or state interference.

The NUJ continues to call for a broader inquiry into unlawful surveillance against journalists, lawyers and human rights defenders in Northern Ireland by police and security forces.

The NUJ has responded after an investigative journalist filed a high court claim against the Police Services of Northern Ireland (PSNI) for unlawfully obtaining communications in order to identify journalistic sources.

The NUJ is marking Black History Month by highlighting the role of journalists in broadening perspectives, challenging stereotypes and amplifying the stories, challenges and achievements of Black communities.

Last night the NUJ Black Members' Council held a well-attended tribute to Lionel Morrison, the union's first Black president. On 20 October the Council will hold the annual Claudia Jones Memorial Lecture, with Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik discussing Black narratives in the media.
