What Filipino stories are hidden in Britain's archives?

During this fireside chat, we'll be joined by Dr Katherine Parker, Cartographic Collections Manager, Ringo Bunoan, art archivist and PhD researcher at UCL, focused on ensuring agency in archiving, and Dr Hana Qugana, Assistant Professor in Global History (University of Sussex). They'll uncover Filipino historical materials held in UK collections and discuss how communities can play an active role in preserving their own histories.

Through a showcase of archival treasures and a conversation about representation, identity and belonging, this session asks: whose stories are captured in the archive, and how can we ensure future generations are represented too?

Come curious, leave inspired, and discover how your story could become part of the historical record.

Before the Philippines adopted the Latin alphabet, many communities used Baybayin, an indigenous writing system that remains an important part of Filipino cultural heritage today.

In this hands-on workshop, you'll be introduced to both traditional Baybayin and Baybayin GLOKAL, a contemporary adaptation designed to reflect the realities of a global Filipino community. Learn about the history and cultural significance of this ancient script, and discover how to read and write your own name, or that of a loved one, in Baybayin.

The workshop is led by Baybayin Master John NL Leyson, a Fine Arts graduate in Visual Communication from the University of the Philippines Diliman. A pioneer of Baybayin advocacy in both Manila and London, John has dedicated his work to preserving, promoting and evolving the script for future generations.

You'll leave with your own framed Baybayin artwork and learning kit, taking home not only a unique piece of Filipino heritage, but also a deeper connection to culture, language and identity.

Suitable for teens and adults. (No prior knowledge or artistic experience required)

"Culture is always changing. But what happens when we try to preserve it?

As part of our programme at the OXO Tower Gallery, we're hosting a fireside chat, ""Tech, Archiving and Language: What's Next in Historical Preservation?""

Hear from Professor Cristina Juan of SOAS, University of London, John NL Leyson, author of Anatomya ng Baybayin (Anatomy of Baybayin) in a fireside chat hosted by artist Chelsea Laylo, as they discuss recent projects uncovering Filipino artefacts across UK collections and using digital tools to make Baybayin and historical research more accessible. Together, they'll explore topics ranging from Filipino language and identity to diaspora, archives and AI, examining how technology is reshaping the way we preserve, interpret and share cultural heritage.

Expect a thought-provoking conversation about what we remember, what we risk losing, and what we choose to pass on.

Afterwards, continue the conversation with John NL Leyson's Introduction to Baybayin workshop, where you'll learn about the ancient Filipino script and try writing your own name in Baybayin. More details coming soon.

This workshop will be led by textiles curator and researcher, Phoebe Singzon of flooble's realm, whose expertise has shaped the visual and materal focus of our exhibition* at HOME Manchester.
