Laibach’s UNTERNEHMEN BARBAROSSA is on view as part of AUSSTELLUNG! LAIBACH KUNST : K.I.E.F.E.R. at Magazin Grando, running from 26.06 to 04.09.2026.

The installation presents a large-scale pen drawing alongside a tapestry woven to the dimensions of Picasso’s GUERNICA, which serves as the primary reference point for the project.

Between December 2021 and March 2022, a single family in rural Afghanistan fabricated the tapestry under Taliban rule. Laibach designed the piece using illustrations by Nikolaj Pirnat (1903–1948), a Slovene graphic artist and early exponent of social realism who produced clandestine resistance graphics after joining the partisan movement in 1943.

The work’s title references the largest military attack of World War Two: N**i Germany’s 1941 invasion of Russia. This operation enacted the ideological goal of conquering the western Soviet Union to secure Lebensraum (living space), exterminate indigenous Slavic populations and exploit natural resources.

A/POLITICAL produced the project and initially displayed the tapestry at The Foundry, France, for DANGER: WE FORGE THE FUTURE (2017), a collaboration with Andrei Molodkin.

Applicants must be 18+ years of age.
Knowledge of Arabic pronunciation.
Prior stage or performing experience.
Full availability between 21 September and 28 September (performance dates).
Availability between 17 September and 21 September (times TBD) for rehearsals with the artist prior to the performance.
