repeatedly strikes a white canvas with a whip smeared in black charcoal.

WHIP IT GOOD! is a ‘reenactment’ of one of the brutal punishment methods used during slavery: “In using the same method on a white canvas, I create a simple, though contradictory, artistic act of striking back,” the artist explains.

Launching on Valentine’s Day, THE REVOLUTION IS MY BOYFRIEND subverts the lie of heteronormative romantic capitalism, queering the materialism of this Hallmark holiday and replacing it with a symbol of uprising.

“The Revolution Is My Boyfriend weaponises luxury against those who hoard it. The artwork mirrors the power structures it seeks to destroy: gold, permanence, exclusivity... The 1% bends us over repeatedly, with or without our consent. This c**k ring is about fighting back and keeping the desire for revolution rock hard. F**k the rich!”

The unique artwork was created by Bruce LaBruce in collaboration with master jeweller .

Presented by A/POLITICAL, it forms part of a special gold edition of the artist’s latest book of the same name, published by .

“This is a tongue that belonged to an adolescent punk that was murdered in Mexico City,” explains .

“His body was going to be given to the morgue. I showed his Mom my work and said that the tongue of her son could speak for a lot adolescents that had been killed.

“A morgue for me is a thermometer of a society. What happens inside a morgue is what happens outside. The way people die show me what is happening in the city. The morgue in Brasil was full of children, and the morgue in Mexico City was full of bodies that had not been identified, because there is not enough resources to cover a funeral.”

“[Work like this] has an initial impact of shock, by what’s important is that after death the tongue keeps talking.”
