We are so happy to announce that Maya arrived safely in Florida and is being fostered by the wonderful Viviane DeRosa.
Maya has had an incredible journey from NE Syria and there are some amazing human beings we need to thank for her rescue.
She owes her life to Havin, a young Kurdish animal activist who reached out to us to help save Maya. She acted instinctively, taking Maya into her care, knowing she had to get her away from her awful conditions, no matter what.

The only way out for Maya was with the help of Dr Sulaiman Tameer, an award winning Iraqi vet and founder of KOARP, the Kurdistan Organization for Animal Rights Protection - the only licensed charity in the country. Thanks to him she made it to safety in Iraq, the journey took days and included a ride in an open back truck with hundreds of chickens!
We want to thank the team at SPCA International for their crucial and generous role organising care, shelter, veterinary services, export and import support, without them this mission would have been impossible. Lori Sholzberg
Shout out to The ARK at JFK for their superb transit kennel care.
We are of course so grateful to Grace, Ginny and Marinella at the Doberman Rescue League, Inc. for offering a huge helping hand from across the world. Without them she would still be waiting in Iraq.
Finally, massive gratitude to Viviane De Rosa for stepping up early and enthusiastically to foster Maya. It’s been a journey since she arrived, we appreciate your tireless effort and the skills and comforts you are investing in her.
We are honoured to be part of Maya’s journey 🙏
