Historic Stage Lighting Collective We are a nonprofit organisation working towards an immersive museum and demo theatre.

HSLC are a heritage group dedicated to bringing together individuals who share a love for preserving, restoring and using stage lighting equipment that spans 250 years. The Historical Stage Lighting Collective (HSLC) was founded in early 2023 by a group of enthusiasts united by their shared passion for pre-LED stage lighting and the rich experiences it evokes. We are a heritage organisation dedicated to the collection, preservation, and restoration of historic stage lighting equipment. Our growing archive, based in Suffolk, houses an extensive array of lighting technologies spanning multiple eras. But unlike a traditional museum, HSLC is a working, hands-on space—where historical techniques are not only displayed but actively explored, tested, and documented. The site includes a curated literature archive, a model theatre, and a dedicated demonstration space designed to support the creation of Colour Music - a captivating technique that interprets musical narratives through sequenced lighting in an evocative theatrical setting. At HSLC, we honour legacy by rigging, illuminating, and operating vintage equipment in context—examining its historical significance, its contemporaries, and the productions it once served. Through this active engagement, we are building a living collection: one that is not only preserved but understood, celebrated, and recognised for its enduring contribution to the art of stagecraft.

What an incredible three days at PLASA 2026!

This was HSLC’s fourth year as part of Classic Gear Live, and once again we were amazed by the interest, conversations and memories our equipment generated throughout the show.

“Betty”, our c.1956 Strand System CD 120 lighting control console, was certainly kept busy with almost constant demonstrations, while the Strand Lightboard lighting control console (1976) and CCT Repertoire Sil 30 (c.1970s) formed part of the National Theatre at 50 display.

We also demonstrated our Strand Pattern 53 Mirror Spot (c.1951–53) with its four-flag semaphore colour changer. While the Patt. 53 dates from the early 1950s, the principle behind Strand’s semaphore colour-changing system goes back around 90 years – and it was wonderful to see it still fascinating people today!

But perhaps the best part of PLASA was the people.

We had so many conversations with old friends and new faces, former operators, designers and technicians, hearing memories and stories, learning new information and making some very useful contacts. That sharing of knowledge and experience is every bit as important to HSLC as preserving the equipment itself.

A huge thank you to our HSLC representatives who gave their time over the three days, demonstrating the equipment, talking to visitors and representing the Collective so brilliantly.

Our thanks also to Rob Halliday and everyone involved with Classic Gear Live for once again giving this history such a prominent place at PLASA.

PLASA also marked the official launch of HSLC membership and new ways to support our work, so we have plenty to follow up!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, watched a demonstration, shared a memory, asked a question or joined HSLC.

See you next year!

WANTED – STRAND PIROUETTE POWER/DATA UNIT

HSLC are shortly receiving a number of Strand Pirouette automated PC/Fresnel lanterns, but unfortunately without their associated control equipment.

We are looking for a Strand Pirouette 4-Way Power/Data Distribution Box / PSU (Cat. 17550), together with any original Pirouette power/data cables.

If anyone has one tucked away in a theatre, store or workshop, or knows where we might find one, we would be very pleased to hear from you.

We’d particularly like to get these Pirouettes operational again so that they can be demonstrated as part of the HSLC Collection.

Day 1 at PLASA 2026!

We’re up and running at Classic Gear Live! at Olympia London.

Come and find us on the stand, where this year the HSLC is displaying “Betty”, our c.1956 Strand Electric System CD120 Console, a Strand Lightboard Console, introduced c.1976, and a Strand Patt. 53 Mirror Spot with four-colour semaphore, c.1953.

There is plenty of historic lighting and control equipment to see across Classic Gear Live, with much of it working and ready to be demonstrated.

If you’re at PLASA today, come over, say hello and have a closer look.

We look forward to seeing you!

PLASA 2026 starts today!

From Sunday 6th to Tuesday 8th September, the Historic Stage Lighting Collective will once again be supporting Rob Halliday and Classic Gear Live! at PLASA, Olympia London, for the fourth consecutive year.

Our Strand Electric CD System lighting control console, affectionately known as “Betty”, will soon be energised and ready for action.

This year Betty will be joined by a restored Strand Pattern 53 Mirror Spot fitted with its four-colour semaphore colour changer, which will be demonstrated from the console, bringing this historic method of remotely changing colour back to life.

Also on display will be a CCT Repertoire Silhouette 30 profile from the National Theatre. The Repertoire Silhouette was developed for the National Theatre in the 1970s and incorporated slide-in lockable shutter sets and interchangeable lens tubes to meet the particular requirements of repertory operation.

It is always a pleasure to support Rob and Classic Gear Live!, where historic entertainment technology can be seen working and demonstrated rather than simply displayed.

If you are visiting PLASA over the next three days, please come along to Classic Gear Live! and say hello. We look forward to seeing you there!

A glimpse into the HSLC Collection…

From the mighty Strong Super Trouper and the glow of its carbon arc, to Strand Patt. 265 lanterns, the Patt. 252 Effects Projector, historic control equipment including Betty and a Strand Junior Interlock Dimmerboard - these are just some of the treasures in our collection.

Preserving the equipment, engineering and stories behind the development of stage lighting and, wherever possible, keeping it working for people to experience again.

Our stage lighting past has quite a story to tell.
