Ensign John Davis Camp No. 10

Ensign John Davis Camp No. 10 We are the first international Camp of the American Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW); Further details are available from us on request..

Established in 1881, the SUVCW honours all Union soldiers and sailors of the 1861-1865 American Civil War. Being the official legal heir to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the SUVCW is entrusted with the preservation of GAR memorials, physically searching out, inspecting and cataloguing each and every GAR and Civil War memorial that can be found. Having received our Charter from the SUVCW in

July 2016, Ensign John Davis Camp No. 10 has a two-fold authority. One legal, from the SUVCW's 1951 Congressional Charter and another moral, based on the purpose and mission of the SUVCW. We are fortunate that our Camp boasts two direct descendants of John Davis as well as other descendants of the London Branch of Civil War Veterans. Ensign John Davis Camp No. 10 is the foremost authority in locating UK veterans' graves, ordering markers from the US Veterans Association and organising dedication ceremonies. We are ourselves currently engaged in advanced planning to establish a permanent memorial in honour of the British subjects who served in the American Civil War. Our research to date indicates that 1,139 Union and 140 Confederate veterans are or are likely to be buried in mainland UK. Of these, we have identified the locations of 407 Union and 61 Confederate veterans. Our Camp holds regular on-line or in-person meetings. We observe Memorial Day (30th May), Remembrance Day and attend various wreath laying ceremonies in support of our partners and the SUVCW mission. Stephen T. Adams - Grave Dedication on 22nd November, 2025

Ensign John Davis Camp No. 10, in collaboration with the management of Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium, were able to put right a situation that had existed for ninety-six years.

In 1926 Private Adams was buried in an unmarked grave; on 22nd November 2025, we were honoured to be able to dedicate a headstone obtained from the U.S. Veteran’s Association, following the Grand Army of the Republic’s own dedication service.

In doing so we were proud to perpetuate the memory of a man who fought to preserve the Union and end slavery in America.

A service led by the Camp’s Chaplain, took place in Hendon’s North Chapel. Hymns and the National Anthems were sung by a choral ensemble, accompanied by solo trumpet and organ. Camp Commander O’Neill and Junior Vice Commander Hammerson gave speeches outlining the significance of the American Civil War and a recounting of Adams’ military and civilian life.

The service was followed by a procession to the graveside where the Chaplain invoked a blessing. Tributes and wreaths were laid and, in the absence of any of Adams’ relatives, the American flag was ritually folded and presented to the Manager of Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2024

Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, takes place on November 11 every year. Silences are held and wreaths are laid at war memorials and cemeteries throughout the land.

Representatives from Ensign John Davis Camp No. 10 laid wreaths at the Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium and Brookwood American Military Cemetery.

By coincidence, 11th November also marks the anniversary of the American Civil War gunboat USS Tulip which was destroyed on that day in 1864. John Davis survived but 49 other sailors perished following the tragic explosion of one of her boilers.

In respect and remembrance, a floral tribute was laid at John Davis’s grave at Nunhead Cemetery by one of his Great grandsons.

MISSOURI FLAG PRESENTATION

24th September 2024, London Athenaeum Club

After learning of our mission's progress in locating the graves of American Civil War veterans buried in England, Pete Oetting, Commander of SUV Lillie Camp No. 6 in Jefferson City, was inspired to send a Missouri State flag to England for presentation to our Camp.

The flag, which had previously flown over the State Capitol, was gifted by Missouri State Senator Mike Bernskoetter and brought overseas by Lillie Camp No. 6 member Frank Wallemann who was holidaying in the UK.

We arranged to meet Frank during his stay in London and lunch with him at the London Athenaeum. Afterwards, on the club's steps, Frank kindly presented the flag to Officers of Ensign John Davis No. 10.

Leeds Library Exhibition

UNION VETERANS BURIED IN LEEDS, YORKSHIRE

An enquiry from our Camp Secretary to Leeds (Yorkshire) Local History Library about two veterans buried in Leeds inspired the library to hold an exhibition about the eight Union veterans we have found buried there, for their Armed Forces Day, an annual celebration of the UK’s armed forces in July.

Our Camp provided them with much information about the veterans, including grave photographs. The Veterans described included:

- William Hails Glover of the 1st US Dragoons

- John Hindle Stafford of the 16th New York Volunteer Infantry

- Alfred Massey Richardson of the 47th New York Volunteer Infantry

- Major John Townsend Daniel of the 36th New York Infantry

- John Wrightson of the 185th New York Volunteer

- Morris Henry Aylsworth of the 24th Wisconsin Infantry and the US Quartermaster’s Department

- Dr Max Rossvalley, whose grave in Leeds bears both Confederate and Union grave markers.

Since the exhibition, we have discovered Wiliam Abbott of the 6th US Cavalry in an unmarked grave in Leeds. We have written to the cemetery offering to obtain a USVA gravestone for him.

PRIVATE JAMES SCHOBEL WHITE

On August 10, the Ensign John Davis Camp No. 10, S.U.V., Department at Large, London, England, held an excellent dedication of a USVA stone for the unmarked grave of Englishman Private James Schobel White, who served from November 1863 to June 1865 in Co. B, 113th Ohio Volunteers and participated n the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign.

Those present at the ceremony, at the East London Cemetery, included representatives of the American Legion, the Royal British Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Deputy Lieutenant for the County of London; the United States Military Attaché’; and many family members, including White’s great-grandson, David Frost.

A chapel service at which the Camp’s Commander and Junior Vice-Commander delivered addresses on the significant of the Civil War today and on veterans buried in the United Kingdom, was followed by a procession to the graveside, which paused at the grave of Medal of Honor Winner Maurice Wagg, U.S.N., buried close by; as chance would have it, he and White had been close friends and active members of the London Branch of American Civil War Veterans, which the Davis Camp is currently researching.

A United States Flag was folded according to the regulations at the grave and presented to Mr. Frost. The service was conducted by the Rev. David Reindorp, past Padre to the Honourable Artillery Company and Honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral. Pleasingly, the ceremony received enthusiastic support from the cemetery management.
