Emmie’s Books raises money to buy books for little warriors and their families.

✨ Supporter Spotlight: George Corr ✨

Today, we want to shine a light on someone who has gone above and beyond for Emmie’s Books - the incredible George Corr.

George has been instrumental in helping us build links with the local Sunday football community, organising for a percentage of revenue from cup matches to be shared between Emmie’s Books and Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice.

He has also proudly secured Emmie’s Books as the charity represented on kit - helping to spread awareness of our mission every time the team steps onto the pitch.

And if that wasn’t enough... George is taking on not one, but two huge fundraising challenges for us - the Kent Half Marathon in October and the Manchester Marathon, next year!

George, thank you for believing in our charity and for everything you continue to do to help us create moments through the magic of stories for children in hospital. We couldn’t be more grateful.

If you’d like to sponsor George, you’ll find the link in our bio. Every donation, no matter the size, will help us put more books into the hands of children who need them most.

Please join us in the comments and leave George a message of encouragement as he trains for these incredible challenges. We know he’ll appreciate all the support! 👇👏

I found this book in a hospital playroom when Emmie was at an appointment. It was a book that had been donated, thanks to the wonderful contributions from our supporters.

Why are books in hospitals so vital?

In 2023, the National Literacy Trust published research exploring the relationship between reading and mental wellbeing. It found that three in five children and young people say reading helps them to relax, while many also described reading as a form of escapism from the challenges of everyday life.

It always reminds me of one of my favourite quotes by Mason Cooley:

“Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.”

That quote perfectly captures the purpose of Emmie’s Books.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life changes in an instant. Hospital rooms become bedrooms, treatment becomes routine, and childhood is interrupted. A book can’t change a diagnosis, but it can transport a child to another world, if only for a little while. It brings moments of comfort, imagination and normality to a situation that is anything but normal.

For our family, story time became so much more than reading. It brought comfort, consistency and precious moments of escape while Emmie was undergoing treatment. As parents, reading together also gave us somewhere else to focus. When you’re confined to a hospital room, watching the clock and waiting for the next test or treatment, a story has the power to free your mind, even for a few minutes.

That’s why Emmie’s Books exists. Through the simple gift of a brand-new book, we’re able to provide comfort, hope and moments of escapism to hundreds of children and families across the UK as they face the unimaginable.

If we can support you, please get in touch 💜

Calling all our wonderful author friends, celebrities, athletes, creators and public figures... 📚💛
Yes, Taylor Swift and Lewis Hamilton - we’re talking to you too! 👀✨

This September, for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re launching a campaign to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer while raising funds to provide brand-new books for children receiving treatment.

We’re looking for people to donate just 60 seconds of their time by recording a short video telling us:

📖 Your favourite childhood book
❤️ What reading means to you
🎗️ Why it’s important to know the signs of childhood cancer
📱 And encouraging viewers to text NEWBOOK to 70580 to donate £5.

One minute of your time could help raise awareness, inspire thousands of people and bring comfort to children facing cancer treatment.

If you’d like to be involved, or know someone who would, please send us a DM or email [email protected] or TAG THEM BELOW 👇

Together, let’s show the power of stories 💛
