It's important to recognise that our early experiences leave a mark on our views of love, relationships, and safety. If you had a childhood where love and safety were not always consistent or mixed with feelings of insecurity, you may unconsciously associate intense love with unsafety.

Here are some steps you can take to break free from these patterns and develop healthier relationships:

➛Start by reflecting on situations where you've accepted or sought out unsafe dynamics. Take note of the emotions and thoughts that were present during those times.

➛Identify and challenge any underlying beliefs you hold about love, safety, and self-worth.

➛Engage in mindfulness practices to become more attuned to your emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations.

➛Learn to set and maintain healthy boundaries in your relationships. This involves understanding your limits, communicating your needs, and prioritising your well-being.

➛Focus on building your self-esteem and self-worth independently of external validation. Engage in activities that make you feel competent, confident, and fulfilled.

➛Surround yourself with people who prioritise mutual respect, emotional safety, and support.

➛Practice self-compassion as you work through challenging emotions and patterns.

➛Develop skills to regulate your emotions without resorting to seeking unsafe situations for validation.

➛Keep a journal to track your progress and gain insights into your experiences.

➛Use guided visualizations or affirmations to reprogram your subconscious mind to visualize yourself in healthy and safe relationships.

Remember, changing deeply ingrained patterns takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and acknowledge that progress might come in small steps.

My brand new programme for women will help you explore your past experiences, understand the root causes of your patterns, and guide you toward healthier ways of relating.

Do you struggle to identify how you feel?

I got asked the other day ‘Emily, what is emotion? How do I know what it is?’

Emotion is an energy which moves through the body, and activates different sensations within us.

Babies are naturally free with their emotions and it’s down to our parental modelling, for how we cope and manage emotions as we grow into adolescence.

If we spend our time worrying about other people’s feelings, we are most likely abandoning our own.

If we reject other peoples feelings and avoid, we most likely to this to ourselves.

If we are over-emotive, it might be that we have a difficult time regulating ourselves and project onto others and other experiences.

What I’ve learnt, is each and every emotion is a past energy, which gets activated by our present experiences.

The anger you feel isn’t new.
The sadness you feel will be familiar.
The joy you experience will be attached to past memories.

Depending on the people, places, things and energy, the brain gets to work mixing a cocktail of neurotransmitters, which get released into the body, triggering the autonomic nervous system to respond.

If, when you were 4 years old, you were told to stop being silly and stop crying, whilst simultaneously being refused love or a hug, your brain files this experience as a belief ‘if I cry, I’m unloved or I’m unsafe’

If you tell your mum you’re scared and can’t sleep, but your told there’s nothing to be scared of, you begin to filter the belief ‘I can’t trust myself’ ‘it’s unsafe to express how I feel’ ‘I must look to others and trust in them more’

We are wired to get back to safety, to want to be heard and to want to be seen. If anything, including an emotion gets in the way of that, we do whatever we can to get back to that safe and familiar place. Often, rejecting and abandoning ourselves and feelings.

Do you welcome all of you, or do you reject the parts you don’t like?

Often in clinic, especially working with eating disorders, addiction, depression or any form of ‘suffering’, it’s easy to reject these parts as you feel shame, guilt, anger about that part of you.

When we feel these heavy emotions and continue to reject, we keep our mental, physical and spiritual body in dis-ease.

One practice I work with personally and professionally, is validating the parts.

You can do this by…

👀Seeing them
👂🏼Hearing them
💓 Loving them

When you can hold space for compassion, as you would to anybody you know who is suffering, you can begin to see these parts for what they are… they’re not bad, they’re not negative.

They are running an internal programme to keep you safe, to keep you feeling familiarity and to avoid the discomfort of healing.

What parts are you rejecting?

Instinct or intuition…

I spent this morning helping a client identify the difference within her, she identified instinct was in her mind and intuition was in her body 👏🏻

Instinct is the learned survival pattern which keeps you safe and ultimately alive. It’s hardwired.

Intuition is the intangible knowing for what to do next, without reason.

When you’re stuck in survival (think fight or flight), your nervous system stays nudged in dysregulation. The hardwired patterns keep moving as if they’re automatic and the same response is generated.

When you begin leaning into trust and intuition, you can feel the discomfort within the body. The discomfort isn’t pain or hurt, it’s merely an unknowing of what is next, a release of control.

When you practice regulating your nervous system, it becomes less about survival and more about awareness and trust.

This trust translates into how you communicate with others, how you sleep, how you choose a partner or the next step in your life.

What do you do to regulate your nervous system?

I’ve taken a break 🤪 and moved to the wonderful countryside of Oxford.

I found myself in the juxtaposition between real life and Instagram.

A place which I didn’t even know existed until I made the decision to step back from the Instagram itself.

In this space I created for myself, my biggest creations have birthed, my ideas have taken shape and I’ve not had to worry about keeping up appearances for somebody who may or may not want to start their journey with me.

It’s been dreamy, eye opening but most of all fulfilling.

My practice is open as usual on Harley Street and I’m continuing to welcome many souls through the doors to either start or continue their journey.

Many of these souls have felt the dis-ease of the global pandemic and have begun to question the real meaning of their life.

Thank you to those who have stuck around, I’m looking forward to sharing this next step of my journey with you 🙏🏼

Are you ready to step through the door to Narnia?

I got to become a leading Clinical Hypnotherapist and Spiritual Transformation Coach, and the founder of The Choosing You Method™, by realising there was another way.

For most of my life, I was anxious and overwhelmed with how I was feeling, always waiting for something bad to happen.

I would doubt what I was doing and try to control everything and everyone around me. I chose to escape what I was feeling and fell down the rabbit hole of over-drinking and over-partying.

11 years ago, I reached breaking point and I embarked on a journey.

It was a journey of finding myself and these days, I support others to break the painful cycles, and become their most confident and happiest selves as they take the leap into an extraordinary life.

Did you receive limiting messages when you were growing up such as:

‘you’re too stupid
‘you’re skin and bones’
'you’re naughty’
‘you’re not smart enough’
'you'll never make it'

Hearing this as a child, meant you developed coping strategies to protect yourself from falling short of what you were told.

These strategies subconsciously transfer into other behaviours as you grow older.
Dis-association
Chronic anxiety
People-pleasing
Addiction
Narcissistic behaviour

Do you want to continue to live within those circumstances?

Or do you CHOOSE to redefine your personal reality?

When you choose you first, you surrender to the outside noise and commit to trusting your own voice.

When you choose you, you move forward with more success.

When you choose you, you create a powerful beginning free from your bothersome thoughts.

Becoming self-aware is the power to choose.
