"This is my fave pic of Ben"
Capturing the character, spirit and determination that made him so special. 🌈🐾
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of retired Police Dog Ben.
Ben licensed as a British Transport Police Police Dog in May 2019 and served alongside his handler, PC Dan Worthington, until his retirement in January 2026 at the age of 9. Throughout his career, Ben demonstrated exceptional dedication, courage and determination, helping to keep railway communities safe and making a lasting impact on the lives of many.
Among his many achievements, Ben was responsible for locating a high-risk missing man after tracking more than 3km through dense woodland, finding him just moments before he was about to end his life. It was an extraordinary act that undoubtedly saved a life and highlighted the incredible value of police dogs in protecting the public.
In recognition of his outstanding work, Ben was a finalist for Lifesaving Dog of the Year at the Service Dogs UK Awards last year.
Following his retirement from policing, Ben was successfully rehomed with a loving new family, where he was able to enjoy the retirement he so richly deserved. Sadly, Ben passed away suddenly after a short illness.
Ben leaves behind an incredible legacy of service, bravery and loyalty. While his working days were remarkable, it is the lives he touched both in and out of uniform that will be remembered most.
Everyone at our charity sends their heartfelt condolences and best wishes to PC Dan Worthington and his family, who shared so much of Ben’s policing journey, and to Ben’s retired owners, who gave him a wonderful home and loving care in his final chapter.
Run free, Ben. 💙💙
