In the aftermath of extreme disasters, it is imperative for landscape architects to assume a central role in the initial stages of humanitarian relief efforts. They should actively participate in discussions aimed at rebuilding resilience and safeguarding our communities and ecosystems.

As the dust settles, our profession doesn't rest; it transforms into a powerhouse shaping policies for a more sustainable world. We are landscape architects that do not just craft spaces but hope and security, ensuring that the scars of devastation pave the way for stronger, greener, and more resilient communities and ecosystems. Our involvement in early discussions is nothing short of transformative for disaster-stricken regions and our planet's sustainable future.

As advocates for both people and the planet, landscape architects are poised to leave an enduring mark on the path to a brighter, greener future.

Join us in this crucial journey towards the inclusion of landscape architects and embracing nature-based solutions. 🌍💚

For many of us, the earthquake in Türkiye and Syria will have raised deeper questions about the role the built environment has on the severity of the disaster, as well as drawing attention to how the humanitarian response has differed depending on which side of a border you live and whether you are considered to have the same rights within those borders (due to religious beliefs, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, age, and abilities).

We are undertaking a critical look at the factors that led up to the disaster and what shaped the inequities of the disaster response. As a result we are aiming to explore the collaboration between different disciplines that could have significantly changed the scale of the humanitarian response.

In the coming weeks we’ll host a Q&A session to unpack these factors but first, we want to start by gathering your thoughts, questions and ideas related to the disaster. This session will aim to distill our collective thoughts, later to be shared as a statement and potentially help actions on the ground and potentially inform future earthquake response using nature based solutions.

Please send your comments as well as register your interest to join the Q&A session by commenting below, DMs or emailing us.
