Today marks 30 years since the genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia.
More than 8,000 Bosnian men and boys were murdered in July 1995, for no reason other than their religious and ethnic identity, in what has been acknowledged as the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War. It was the culmination of a campaign of violence and persecution against Bosnian Muslims across Bosnia, with many more lives lost and countless affected.
We remember the victims, and we honour and stand in solidarity with the survivors and families who have carried the weight of this immense loss for three decades. However, this anniversary is not only a time for remembrance. It is a moment for reckoning. The promise made of “Never Again” rings hollow in a world where conflict, ethnic persecution, and mass displacement continue to scar lives. We have not learned enough. Commemoration must come with reflection, and reflection must lead to responsibility and accountability.
Let us carry forward the memory of Srebrenica not only in mourning, but in our actions to confront hatred, prevent violence, and protect human dignity - wherever it may be under threat.
We remember Srebrenica.
