Our Healthwatch Haringey team has explored the experiences of the Latin American (LATAM) community when accessing health and social care services in Haringey.

The research highlights:

🔹 The importance and presence of the Latin American community in Haringey

🔹 Barriers people face when accessing services

🔹 Differences between health systems in the UK and countries participants have previously lived in

🔹 Health inequalities affecting the community

🔹 Hidden mental health challenges and the support needed to improve wellbeing

The findings aim to help inform commissioners and decision-makers in Haringey and across the UK, supporting improvements to make services more inclusive and accessible.

Everyone deserves health and care services that meet their needs.

Ariam Shed demonstrates the positive impact that community partnerships can achieve.

Supported by funding from the VCS Healthy Neighbourhoods Fund through Haringey Community Collaborative, the project was developed through strong local collaboration, bringing together residents, community organisations, and partners around a shared vision.

Ariam Shed offers a free, inclusive space where people can connect, develop new skills, improve their wellbeing, and contribute to environmental sustainability through furniture restoration and creative reuse. We are proud to have helped support a project that strengthens community connections while creating healthier, more sustainable neighbourhoods across Haringey.

From physical health challenges and limited access to professional advice, to the impact of rising costs, many people are being prevented from enjoying the benefits of exercise.

Healthwatch Barnet spoke to 113 residents and found that accessibility, better support from healthcare professionals, and affordable opportunities are key to helping more people stay active.

Haringey Community Collaborative is delighted to have supported the development of Ariam Shed, an innovative community workshop based at Clements House in Northumberland Park.

Through the VCS Healthy Neighbourhoods Fund, the Collaborative helped provide funding for a project that brings residents together to learn practical skills, build confidence, improve wellbeing, and reduce waste through furniture repair and upcycling.

Alongside financial support, Haringey Reach and Connect played an important role in helping establish partnerships and local connections that have been key to the project's success. Ariam Shed is a fantastic example of how collaboration and co-design can create lasting social and environmental benefits for local communities.

Exercise can improve both physical and mental wellbeing, but for many people with long-term health conditions, barriers remain.

A new Healthwatch Barnet report found:
• 63% of respondents said physical health issues limit their ability to exercise
• 35% would be encouraged by advice from a GP or health professional
• 75% had little or no disposable income, making cost a significant obstacle

The report highlights good practice and recommends changes to ensure everyone has the opportunity to be active, regardless of their health condition.

Call to embed lived experience into healthcare decision-making: At the NICE Conference 2026 in Manchester, Jano Goodchild of Public Voice emphasised the importance and value of co-production in shaping more effective and inclusive health and care outcomes.

Over the next 12 months, Jano hopes to see more NICE guidance developed directly with people who have lived experience, resulting in recommendations that are more reflective of working with communities.
