Today is the day that Husieni, Abdulfetah, Hasina and friends from Afar in Ethiopia harvest an impressive total of 2,500 kg of chilli peppers. 🌶🌶🌶

This bumper crop was made possible with support from Farm Africa and the African Development Bank, who offered training in climate-smart agriculture, high-quality seeds and the installation of solar-powered irrigation. 🔆💦

The group, chaired by a female farmer, is taking part in a project that champions the inclusion of women in traditionally male-dominated farming cooperatives, and promotes nature-friendly farming practices that don’t cost the Earth. 🌍

The chillies will be sold locally as well as to buyers in the capital city Addis Ababa, providing sustainable incomes for the 25 group members, including 17 women.

Prolonged droughts are making it harder for smallholder farmers like Alex from Uganda to earn a living.

But with support from Farm Africa and AGRA-Sustainably Growing Africa’s Food Systems., Alex from the Kamuli District is able to earn a decent income growing and selling crops using sustainable farming methods that don’t cost the Earth.

Watch to see how using solar-powered irrigation, mulch and organic pesticides have boosted Alex’s resilience to climate extremes. Farming shouldn’t cost the Earth, combat climate change.

“My life has changed a lot. I laid the foundations of the house in 2012, but I had to stop because I didn’t have any money. Then once I started working with Farm Africa, in my second year, I managed to get the money to complete the house in 2022.”

With support from Farm Africa and SNV Tanzania through the NOURISH project in Tanzania, Teluvina increased her income through sorghum farming, vegetable growing and other business ventures – helping her complete the family home she had spent ten years building.

The foundations were always there. Farm Africa helped her build on them. Teluvina’s story shows how access to training, quality inputs and markets can turn unfinished beginnings into real progress.

Green energy is transforming the livelihoods of the Abahina, Mohammed, Amina and Friends Income Generating Group, who live in the Afar Regional State in Ethiopia.

With support from Farm Africa and the African Development Bank, the group has installed a solar-powered water pump.

Now they have access to irrigation, the 28 group members have been able to grow an incredible 18,000 kg of onions on four hectares of land. As well as selling to local markets, this bumper crop secured them a sale to a wholesaler based 145km away in Adama. 🧅🧅🧅

They’re also looking forward to harvesting bananas, lemons and mangoes from the fruit trees they’ve planted. 🍌🍋🥭
