For Volunteers Week, we're celebrating the incredible Janet Foster, who recently marked her 80th birthday and continues to make a remarkable difference in our community. 🎂 🎉

A long-standing and dedicated volunteer at The Brenner Stepney Jewish Community Centre, Janet has given countless hours of service to supporting local people. She also chairs the Friends of Brenner Fundraising Committee, helping to ensure the centre can continue providing vital services and opportunities for members of the community.

The Brenner Centre is a vibrant hub where people come together to enjoy activities, social connections and hot meals throughout the week.

Thank you, Janet, for your commitment, kindness and dedication. Your contribution inspires us all and shows the true spirit of volunteering.

Wishing you all Shabbat Shalom. 💜

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re highlighting Harrison Woolf, who volunteers at Anita Dorfman House care home at our Sandringham campus. 💜

At just 14, Harrison is affectionately known as “the Shabbat Boy” for his dedication to Friday night services and Kiddush, bringing warmth, tradition and a real sense of community to residents each week.

What started as part of his Duke of Edinburgh award has grown into something much more meaningful. Harrison has built genuine relationships with residents, taking the time to get to know them and creating bonds that have only strengthened over the years.

Harrison was recognised for his incredible commitment at the Betty and Aubrey Lynes Volunteer Awards 2025 — a testament to the difference he makes.

Harrison shares: “I had to complete volunteering for my Duke of Edinburgh award, but ever since, I have got closer to the residents. Getting to know them over so many years has made my bond with them even stronger.”

Thank you, Harrison, for the joy you bring each week 💫

Shabbat Shalom.

Meet Hayden Steinberg, who volunteers with YJJC at our Super Sundays. 🧡

After seeing the joy a simple celebration brought to his grandpa and other residents at Jewish Care’s Vi & John Rubens House care home, Hayden was inspired to give back, and hasn’t looked back since.

“Seeing the joy it brought and hearing residents reminisce about their own wedding days made me realise how much even a simple interaction can mean.”

Now a regular volunteer, Hayden says it’s the people who make it so special:

“The residents have the most incredible stories. Many have lived through both World War II and the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as so many other significant moments in history. Listening to their experiences gives me a real sense of perspective.”

Hayden has taken part in a wide range of activities, from sharing meaningful one-to-one conversations and laughter with residents, to celebrating Jewish festivals like Purim, which he describes a real highlight. He particularly loved seeing the effort Jewish Care goes to in bringing residents from different homes together and all the fun costumes!

He shares, “Even a short conversation can brighten someone’s day. You never realise how much an interaction means until you put a smile on someone’s face. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience.”

Thank you, Hayden, for making such a difference 💜

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re highlighting Albert Joseph, who volunteers with our Meals on Wheels service in Redbridge. 🚗💜

Albert helps pack and deliver meals to people living independently at home, but it’s not just the practical support that matters. That friendly knock on the door and a quick chat can make all the difference to someone’s day.

Albert won the Unsung Hero Award at Jewish Care’s Volunteer Awards in October.

Albert shares: “I had to retire as I could no longer do my job. I found myself wondering what I’d do without work. Then I found Meals on Wheels. I love being part of the team. Jewish Care are fantastic, and as I am Jewish, I wanted to give back to the community.”

“I like to drive and to help people. Some of them don’t see anybody at all, so having this is a real blessing.”

Looking ahead, Meals on Wheels will soon be based at our new Sugar & Ronson campus and Albert says he’s excited to continue volunteering from there.

Thank you, Albert, for the extraordinary difference you make. 💫

For Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the moments that matter. 💜

Meet Simon, one of our incredible befriending volunteers. Here he is sharing the newspaper and a chat with one of the people he supports, a simple moment that means so much.

From a cup of tea to a listening ear, Simon brings companionship, comfort and connection to those who need it most.

“I started volunteering to give back to the community… we talk, I listen, and I look forward to seeing them.”

Simon has also helped bring volunteers together, inspiring regular coffee mornings where befrienders can share stories, advice and support - building a stronger, more connected community.

Thank you, Simon, and all our amazing befrienders, for the difference you make every day.

🎉 Many happy returns to Phyllis Lewis, who recently celebrated her incredible 103rd birthday! 🎂💜

Phyllis attends Jewish Care’s Supportive Communities Tea Parties and has lived a remarkable life full of family, friendship and memorable experiences. ☕️

She began her career as a secretary specialising in shorthand and typing, and during the war worked for the Home Guard in Bury St Edmunds. After WWII, Phyllis met her husband Cyril at a club night at Wembley Synagogue, and they married in 1948. Together they built a loving family, welcoming two children, Julian and Danielle, and later grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her younger years, Phyllis enjoyed playing golf, followed by lunch and a game of bridge and said she feels lucky to have had such lovely friends and family. 🤗

From everyone at Jewish Care, we wish Phyllis a very happy 103rd birthday and many more celebrations to come. 🎉

Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom. 💜
