To Serve with Love 💛💙 Sandy's Story

I have recently participated in the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts World Conference in Cambodia and Girl Scouts of the USA 58th National Council session and Girls Unite Event. I am so full of pride and emotion that I decided I needed to get this out before I burst!

Many of you may remember the movie with Sidney Poitier To Sir With Love. In the movie Sidney Poitier, is a teacher, and one of the songs in the movie is To Sir With Love. “How you thank someone who has taken you from crayons to perfume. It isn’t easy but I’ll try.”

How do I thank an organization that has taken me from a little Girl Scout Brownie at seven years old proudly wearing her Brownie beanie to a 76 year old adult still so proud wearing her Girl Scout uniform. An organization that was there for me at age 14 when my Daddy died. An organization that taught me to live by a Promise and Law. An organization that has given me and continues to bless me with so many dear friends around the entire world. That taught me everything from how to build a cardboard oven to how to appreciate and embrace cultures around the world.

When I was 11 years old and a Junior Girl Scout, a lady came to our troop to talk to us about the World Neighbor badge. She asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said “I want to be a Girl Scout and travel around the world starting Girl Scout troops where there are none."

An organization that has given me a global lens and a 42 year career traveling around the world doing what I love to do. I am now retired, and I lead the Capacity Building team of volunteers for our World Organization of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts whose job is to strengthen our member organizations in 154 countries and support new countries who would like to be a member.

But let’s get back to being grateful. I was talking to a neighbor this morning trying to explain the World Conference and the Girls Scouts of the USA National Council Session and Girl’s Unite…. Which is really impossible. He said he would love to see a picture! A picture…I don’t know how to do that in one picture!

Then he asked … How long will you serve the Girl Scout organization? At which time I had to walk away as tears streamed down my face! When I could speak again I said loudly as he had walked away “ As long as I am alive. “ His reply … I knew that would be your answer.

🌟 What a wonderful achievement! 🌟

A huge congratulations to 5-year-old Nellie and her mum, Kirsty, who successfully completed the Westminster Mile this weekend in an incredible 9 minutes and 25 seconds! 🏃‍♀️🎉

It is extra special to see that Nellie took on the challenge in her Rainbows uniform! 💙🌈

Nellie and Kirsty took on the Westminster Mile to raise funds for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), and have already raised a wonderful £380, surpassing their target of £350 🌍💗

Nellie even managed to fit in plenty of high fives and meet Batman and Spiderman along the way! 🦸‍♀️

WAGGGS is so proud of their incredible achievement, and it has been so lovely to follow their journey and cheer them on. What a superstar Nellie is, and we know she is so excited to show her Rainbows group her medal! 🥰🏅
