Yesterday at our Vauxhall studios, our Director Ray spent the day working alongside his longtime friend and fellow artist, Ceri, developing a new piece for our upcoming exhibition WASHED UP.

🧵 WHO TORE THE FABRIC?

A new piece of work exploring the complex role of religion in society — how it can be a powerful source of deep solidarity, bringing people together, yet also create profound social divisions. BEHIND THE MASK 🎭 SAILOR MAS 🔆SUSTAINABILITY

What holds us together? What pulls us apart? And what happens when the fabric that connects us begins to tear?

The conversations continue, the ideas develop, and the work is still in progress.

What a summer it has been for Sunshine International Arts!

One of our members, Shula, summed it up beautifully:
“You do so well to promote Trinidad’s important cultural annual event (British style) and bring so much joy to all who participate. You bring colour into lives — if only for one day or event”

This summer we:
🎭 Reached 50,000 audiences and participants
🌍 Delivered work locally, nationally and in Scotland
🏠 Settled into our new home at SET Vauxhall, with incredible support
🎨 Created new exhibition work and launched new programmes
⚓ Continued our work as a leading UK Caribbean Carnival production company, creating traditional and contemporary Carnival costumes for Notting Hill Carnival

And this is just the beginning…

🌞🎭 WHAT A WEEK WE’VE HAD IN VAUXHALL! 🎭🌞

Last Saturday, for the first time, we opened the doors of our SET Vauxhall studios to the public — and WOW! What a response! 💜Part of SET celebration of 10 years!!!

New visitors experienced the colour, creativity and sheer grandness of Caribbean Carnival, and we loved sharing a little of what Sunshine is all about.

Then Wednesday… we truly felt loved and at home! 🏠❤️

A huge thank you to The Foundry Collective and our friends at Vauxhall for such an amazing event and for welcoming us into the Vauxhall community.

It was also fantastic to meet so many organisations doing great things across the area.

A new home. New connections. New possibilities.

Join us at our new SET Vauxhall studio for Open Studios, with an art exhibition on the ground floor, an archive display, and the 10 Years of SET exhibition open throughout the day.

🎨 Our very own .u.lu has a piece in the exhibition, exploring his work with discarded materials and his connection to Brazilian Carnival — bringing together sustainability, creativity and Carnival culture.

🕑 2–6 PM

Come and see the exhibition on the first floor exploring the 10 Years of SET group exhibition and discover our new creative home.

🎭🌞 24 YEARS — LOOKING BACK AT OUR WORK

As we celebrate 24 years as a UK arts charity, we’re looking back at some of the moments that have shaped Sunshine International Arts.

2015–2016 | West Africa: Word, Symbol, Song British Library

A central showpiece of the exhibition was La Belle, also known as La Belle Créole — a specially commissioned Carnival masquerade costume designed by our Director, Ray Allan Mahabir, of Sunshine International Arts.

The work was also displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum , creating another opportunity to showcase the craftsmanship, creativity and cultural richness of Carnival to new audiences.

✨ In 2017, Ray was also a guest at the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan Mayor of London’s Summer Culture Reception, pictured here with Brenda Emmanus, BBC London News Arts Correspondent.

🎉🌞 TOMORROW — 25 SEPTEMBER | 24 YEARS AS A UK ARTS CHARITY

For 24 years, Sunshine International Arts has been shaped by our Director Ray and his vision — rooted in early experiences of working with people, art, culture and community.

It was through this journey that “The Art of People” became our guiding ethos. ❤️

24 years on, that vision continues.

We remain committed to Caribbean Carnival, its art, culture and history, sharing its richness and helping audiences understand Carnival as more than a street festival — it is a powerful cultural art form.

🎉🌞 25 SEPTEMBER — 24 YEARS AS A UK ARTS CHARITY

This month marks 24 years of Sunshine International Arts as a UK arts charity.

Behind it all was a vision from our Director, Ray Allan Mahabir.

The charity grew from Ray’s creative and cultural work in India, including his work with Mulana, where his experiences with people, art, culture and community helped shape the vision that became Sunshine International Arts.

It was also through this journey that “The Art of People” became our guiding ethos. ❤️

24 years on, that vision continues.

We remain committed to Caribbean Carnival, its art, culture and history — working to educate, share its richness and gain the respect it deserves, not simply as a street festival, but as a powerful cultural art form with deep roots in history, identity, creativity and community. Funding as an NPO from the Arts Council England since 2013

🚶🏽‍♂️🌊 WEDNESDAY LUNCHTIME WALK — THE REVIVAL OF ALBERT EMBANKMENT

Big thanks to Vauxhall lunchtime walk with Yvonne Yvonne Shorten from Lambeth Pier to St George Wharf, exploring the history of the river and the revival of Albert Embankment.

The River Thames is such an important part of London’s story — shaping how the city grew, worked, travelled, traded and connected people.

Walking along the Embankment and hearing these stories gives you a different perspective on London and the history that is right on our doorstep.

As a new/returning local, it makes you want to learn more, explore more and understand the place you now call home.

Sometimes London’s history is literally beneath your feet. 🌊🏙️ Lambeth Tour Guides Association
