Not only do we need physical rest, but mental and sensory rest too - according to Dr Saundra Dalton-Smith. Switching off, unplugging, and having "intentional moments of sensory deprivation," are all things she recommends:

Are you getting your seven or eight hours of sleep a night — yet you still feel exhausted? Here’s why that could be happening, according to physician Saundra Dalton-Smith.

We have 24hrs left on our crowdfund - anyone who wanted to donate, this is the moment! We are not going to meet our target but even small amounts will help us to get some research underway, and approach larger funders. Thank you so much!

"Are smartphones addictive? An urgent question in the pandemic age" is the title of a paper co-written by Dr Ben Carter, one of the speakers at our Screen Burn Launch event this Thursday. Dr Carter is the Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics and Mental Health at King's College London. Here's some quotes from his paper:

"Behavioural features of problematic smartphone use include having an intense urge to use your phone; spending more time on it than you first intended to; neglecting other more important things to use it; and continuing to use it despite knowing how much it affected other areas of their life, including sleep or work."

"Despite considerable scepticism in the academic literature regarding classification of problematic smartphone use as a behavioural addiction, there is a growing international body of literature which uses validated measures mapping onto features of behavioural addiction. Further, many studies now report associations with both psychological harm i.e. depression, anxiety and sleep, physical harm i.e. musculoskeletal problems and obesity, and decreased functioning"

"Once we have better understood how we can use smartphones safely to support and connect us while avoiding harms associated with particular patterns of use, we can employ this remarkable technology with greater peace of mind"

Meet Julia Bell, author of 'Radical Attention' who will be speaking at our Screen Burn launch event on 6th May (it's free!). Here's the book blurb: "An essay on the battle for our attention in the age of distraction. Attention pays. In today's online economy it has become a commodity to be bought and sold. In exchange for our attention, information and entertainment is ever at our fingertips. But at what cost? In this essay, at once personal and polemical, meditative and militant, Julia Bell asks what has been lost in this trade off. How can we reclaim our attention? In a world of infinite distraction, how can attention become radical?"
