For this months SABB Spot we shift our focus onto a very important date in the Bengali calendar. As well as exploring the history behind Victory Day, we also look at the role of film in Bangladesh.

We continue our year long focus on climate change, this time turning our attention on the Sundarbans, an incredibly important ecological area in the Bengal region.

Our next speaker on the VD Expert Panel is helping shape the future of one of the most important sectors of society - agriculture.

Md. Arif Hossain is the CEO and Executive Director of Farming Future Bangladesh (FFB). He is a Visiting Scientist and Visiting Fellow at the Department of Global Development, Cornell University, USA. FFB is a comprehensive communication and community engagement organisation aimed to improve awareness about modern agricultural innovations including crop biotechnology to ensure sustainable food security in Bangladesh. Based in Dhaka, it operates in collaboration with Alliance for Science, Boyce Thomson Institute, Cornell University and Michigan State University with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and USAID.

Arif is a 2015 Alliance for Science Global Leadership Fellow and remains the Lead, Bangladesh Alliance for Science. He is the former communications director of the Feed the Future South Asia Eggplant Improvement Partnership. Arif is passionate about science communication, loves photography, and also plays the guitar.

We are excited to announce Jebi Rahman as our second speaker for our Victory day Expert Panel.

Jebi has been delivering international and sustainable development programmes for a decade and a half, covering a range of issues including poverty alleviation, quality education, gender equality and climate change.

She is currently Head of Transparency and Pathways at Climate Group and has previously worked with BRAC and other large international organisations. Jebi has gained in-depth country experience working in Bangladesh, India, Japan, South Africa, South Sudan, and overseeing projects in Latin America.

She holds Masters degrees from Glasgow and Oxford University. In 2010, she cycled from Sylhet to Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh to highlight the impacts of climate change.

We are excited to announce Professor Saleemul Huq as our first speaker for our Victory day Expert Panel.

Prof. Saleemul Huq is the Director of the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) and a Professor at the Independent University Bangladesh (IUB).

He is an expert in adaptation to climate change in the most vulnerable developing countries and has been a lead author of the third, fourth and fifth assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). and he also advises the Least Developed Countries (LDC) group in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

A report earlier this year by Onalytica ranked him at 4th amongst the top 20 Climate Change Influencers in the world.

On the 16th December 1971, Victory was declared against opposition forces, marking the end of the liberation war. This year marks 50 years since that fateful day. Last year we looked back on how far we have come as a community, both at home and amongst the diaspora, and we explored upcoming challenges we'd face as a community. This year we focus on perhaps the greatest challenge, and one that threatens the existence of not just Bangladesh but the global community as a whole - Climate Change.

We will be hosting two online events. A discussion forum that gives young people an opportunity to share their understanding and ideas of the climate crisis and an expert panel where attendees can hear directly from people contributing to the fight against climate change in different ways. No prior background knowledge or understanding is needed to take part in either event.

As the term is soon coming to an end, SABB is excited to host an end of semester social: Bangla Royale, Squid Game Edition.

Come down for a competitive evening against your friends to see if you have what it takes to go be the last person standing, and of course be in the chance to win our mystery prize.

We will be hosting iconic games such as Red Light - Green Light, Tug of War but will be chucking in our own games with British AND Bengali TWIST. Remember, there can only be ONE winner!
