Widows have almost no support from their states; they totally depend on family members or charities. But these days, as widely seen, families are abandoning widows and so they go through hunger, mental distress, trauma and if she has children the problem becomes acute and the situation precarious. Almighty says in the Quran:
‘And they feed for the love of Allah (SWT) the indigent, the orphan and
the captives, saying: We feed you for Allah’s (SWT) sake: No reward do we seek from you nor thanks.’
- Surah 76: Ayah 8-9
And there’s a Hadith of prophet Mohammad P.B.U.H. A giver of maintenance to the widows and poor like a giver in the way of God, an utterer of prayers all night, and fasting during the day. Islam teaches us that as Muslims we must offer help to widows and orphans as a duty. We should support them emotionally and financially so they can stand in society with dignity and respect.
