We are excited to announce that we will be participating in a new three-year international research project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). The project will explore how universities can play a stronger role in supporting their local communities.

We are especially grateful to Dr Rosi Smith, from the Education Division within De Montfort University’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (HLS), who will lead the project. This initiative is the result of her dedication and hard work in bringing together partners and shaping its vision. Our Directors, Dr Emily Morris and Dr Lauren Collins, will each be working on this project for 20% of their time. Emily will be working with our Cuban partners to develop appropriate tools for measurement of impacts of the university-community engagement on economic development, and Lauren will focus on analysis of how the participatory processes function.

Titled 'Universities in Communities (Cuba and the UK): Developing Capacity for Change', the project will focus on the integrated, close collaboration between universities and their local communities in Cuba and will examine how local universities can help build long-term social and economic change.

The work will include a linked project that will take place in Leicester and will explore which aspects of the Cuban approach could be adapted to a UK context and contribute to the growing civic university agenda.

In Dr Smith’s words: “This research offers an important opportunity to learn from a higher education system where universities are deeply embedded within their communities. By working closely with our Cuban partners, we hope to identify practical approaches that can inform policy and strengthen the civic role of universities in Leicester, the UK and internationally.”

We were pleased to host a significant meeting at the Embassy today to discuss the future of scientific and academic cooperation between our nations.

Dr. Fidel Antonio Castro Smirnov was joined by the directors of Cricketcic, Dr. Emily Morris (UCL) and Dr. Lauren Collins. It was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and explore new frameworks for collaboration.

When experts of this calibre come together, it strengthens the bridge between the UK and Cuba, paving the way for future projects that benefit us all.

Stay tuned to our channels for updates on our ongoing work in science and education.

Cameron is a community support professional who recently took a break to complete a PhD in Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London, with a thesis in algebraic geometry and categorical logic. She has a strong interest in social justice and developed a passion for the Caribbean during her travels in Cuba. Cameron has now joined CRICKET CIC to support our work as a fundraiser. We are delighted to have her on board!

During our Co-Director Emily Morris’ recent trip to Havana, she took part in an event at the British Embassy’s annual British Culture Week.

The theme of this year’s activities was Climate Change. Emily contributed to a ‘Science speaks’ panel at the ambassador’s residence, presenting on “UK private sector experiences and the role of sustainability in business longevity.”

Among the audience and other speakers were environmental scientists, communicators and organisers of impressive local community projects, so it was a great opportunity to connect with Cubans working on climate action and sustainability.

Over the past five years, we’ve worked closely with the Fundación Universitaria de Innovación y Desarrollo (University Foundation for Innovation and Development, https://fundacioninnova.uh.cu/). Established by the University of Havana under the leadership of Dr. Vilma Hidalgo, the ‘Fundación-UH’, as it is known, is a pioneering non-profit organisation that facilitates the contribution of the university’s research community – across all of its faculties, research centres, and development groups – to the needs of society and the productive sector. It has played an invaluable role in helping the CRICKET CIC team to align our work with the priorities of university researchers and the communities and enterprises that they serve, and to identify potential project partners.

Since 2022, when we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Fundación UH, the relationship has flourished. Events they have organised have given us a platform to engage with national and international audiences, and at countless meetings, both online and at their offices in Vedado, they have linked us with leading scientists based at Havana University and other institutions to develop ideas for collaboration, review progress and thrash out plans. We are now making arrangements to participate in a Fundación UH-hosted workshop in Havana in February 2026, on ‘Connecting ecosystems for sustainable development’.

A crucial benefit of this relationship has been the contribution of the Fundación UH legal affairs department. Its essential expertise in intellectual property – and the support of Dr Enrico Bonadio, our Associate based at City St George’s University of London – have enabled CRICKET CIC to initiate a new area of our work, to support the protection of Cuban researchers’ scientific innovations. This includes one of the most significant recent developments: a battery material created by IMRE-UH. The next step on this innovation is to work with the Fundación UH team to identify and attract suitable international commercial partners in order to realise its potential economic returns.

We are delighted to announce the registration in the UK of a patent for a low-cost method for the production of a chemical material with dual magnetic and energy storage properties for use in batteries. The chemical allows for rapid charging in under 15-20 minutes without suffering substantial losses of capacity. Now that the patent is in place, steps can be taken toward the development and commercialisation of this cutting-edge technology.

CRICKET CIC Associate Dr Renier Arabolla led the development of this ground-breaking chemical, initially as a member of the battery research team at the University of Havana’s Institute of Materials Science and Technology (IMRE), and subsequently at University College London’s Electrochemical Innovation Laboratory, (EIL) where Dr Arabolla spent 9 months as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow between September 2021 and May 2022. He then founded the Cuba-Britain Energy Network (CuBENet) in May 2022, which also includes the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwick, led by Prof. Richard Walton, Chair of the Chemistry Research Committee.

The University of Havana's Fundación Universitaria de Innovación y Desarrollo, with whom we hold a Memorandum of Understanding, has been our key partner throughout this process. CRICKET CIC extends its thanks to Dr Alex Rettie of the EIL for facilitating Dr Arabolla’s Research Fellowship and for hosting Adrian Enríquez Martínez, also from IMRE, who conducted experimental work at the EIL. We are also grateful to CRICKET CIC Associate Dr Enrico Bonadio of City, St George’s University, for his invaluable support and guidance on patent registration.

Exchange visits, workshops and conference presentations, facilitated by CRICKET CIC, involved many other Cuban and UK colleagues with a range of expertise, have firmly established the Cuba-UK Energy Network, demonstrating the value of international collaboration.
