Global Civility

Global Civility Play your part - support the international call for Global Civility. Sign the declaration today.

The campaign for Global Civility invites every citizen of the world to recognise that being civil to one other should be the bedrock of all societies. We encourage every citizen to engage with others whilst being conscientious and aware of our tone, our demeanour, and our attitude, no matter how polarised our opinions are. We must see in others what we wish others to see in us – simply put, that w

e are part of the same human family and that we each deserve respect and a civil response because of this simple fact. In this spirit, we are excited to ask you to join your fellow human beings and sign up to the Global Civility Declaration and the Principles of Global Civility. If you are a community-based organisation, charity or authority, such as the police, fire, ambulance, hospital or other emergency service. Or maybe you are a place of education, a governing body, or sporting association. Or perhaps you are a public official, a businessperson, a celebrity or influencer, an artist, a professional. Or you may be a member of the armed forces, please help us to promote the principles of Global Civility and reach out to your network and invite them to sign up today. The campaign for Global Civility seeks to channel what can be a powder-keg of anger and frustration into a constructive dialogue emphasising the need for social cohesion and respect for the beliefs and views of others. By so doing, the Campaign articulates the need for self-restraint and responsibility as a basis for disagreeing agreeably as the cornerstone for civil interaction and behaviour. The Campaign is now a global initiative, inviting humanity in all its diversity and colour, to be part of a significant movement for change. As it gathers pace, it is finding support in all corners of the world, among local, national and international leaders, as well as among those who defend the right of others to speak freely whilst reminding all to act with civility when doing so.

Screens do not remove responsibility. Every comment, share, and message affects real people. Digital civility matters as much as real-world kindness.

You do not have to agree with someone to be respectful towards them. Civility means listening even when opinions differ and responding without harm. A civil society grows when dialogue replaces division.

Let us build spaces where conversations heal instead of hurt.

A nation torn apart by war.
A leader who refused hatred.
He chose healing over revenge.

Abraham Lincoln chose the more noble path.
He spoke of mercy.
He urged reconciliation.
He reminded people that rebuilding a nation required dignity, restraint, and shared humanity.
His leadership showed that civility is not passive. It is a deliberate choice made when anger feels justified and revenge feels easy.
True leadership does not deepen divides.
It bridges them.
In a world still struggling with polarisation, his example reminds us that harmony begins when leaders and citizens alike choose respect over resentment.

Lending a hand costs little
but means a lot

Civility is choosing to help.
Civility does not always require words.
Sometimes, it is simply stepping in and helping when someone needs it.

Offering support, giving assistance, lending a hand – these small choices shape how humane our world feels.
Let us make helpfulness a habit, not an exception.

🕊 Choose civility in everyday actions

As another year comes to a close, we often think about what we want to leave behind.
An important question to reflect on is what we choose to take with us.

More patience?
More empathy?
More respect for people who think differently?

Civility is not something we can wait for the world to fix.
It is something we must practise, one choice at a time.

As you step into the new year, ask yourself:
What values will guide the way I speak, listen, and treat others?

💬 Share one word in the comments for what you want to carry forward into the new year.
