This alarming trend, confirmed during field visits in 2022 and 2023, highlights the immediate and devastating impact of climate change on our food systems. Local agronomists attribute the problem to a larval species and recommend the application of pesticides. However, this approach raises concerns about its long-term viability and potential environmental repercussions. The widespread use of pesticides on diverse crops such as mangoes, cashews and oranges further amplify these concerns, raising questions about the growing need for chemical interventions and their cumulative effects.
The situation in Mozambique serves as a stark reminder that the climate crisis is not a distant threat; is putting food security and livelihoods at risk today. The impact goes beyond economic losses, affecting the nutritional well-being of those who rely on backyard avocado trees for sustainability.
We must prioritize sustainable agricultural practices and innovative solutions to safeguard our food systems and support vulnerable communities. The consequences of inaction extend far beyond Mozambique. A significant portion of the food consumed in the Western world comes from small-scale family farms. The stability of our food supply and the availability of beloved fruits like avocados, mangoes and cashews are intrinsically linked to the well-being of these farmers and the ecosystems they depend on.
