We, the IWGB Private Hire Drivers Union, urge Sadiq Khan to halt the rollout of driverless cars in light of a report from the London Assembly Transport Committee.

The report, released on Monday, October 12, confirmed our fears about the threats driverless cars pose to our jobs and our ability to support ourselves and feed our families. We are deeply concerned about the damage they will cause to our lives, communities, and more.

To top it off, their findings led to questions about whether Londoners wanted or needed driverless cars, citing no public consultations and YouGov data showing little public interest.

It is also unclear whether driverless cars will fix London's congestion issues or even add to it. There's also doubt about how it fits into the Mayor's Transport Strategy.

We welcome this report and take its findings as evidence that our opposition to driverless cars is common sense and rational.

As drivers, we are building a movement to stop them, inspired by similar victories in New York and across the US.

IWGB Private Hire Drivers Union met Elly Baker at City Hall!

On 21 September, IWGB Private Hire Drivers members met with Elly Baker AM, London-wide Member and Deputy Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee, to discuss the proposed introduction of driverless cars in London.

We discussed safety, regulation, jobs and the need for strong scrutiny of Transport for London’s approach. Elly agreed to share the Transport Committee’s report and evidence on the safety of driverless cars while will continue building political pressure and engaging MPs, the Mayor and other allies.

We are clear in our mission: London does not need driverless cars at the expense of drivers’ jobs and livelihoods.

Driverless cars are being rushed onto our streets. But who benefits?

Certainly not the thousands of drivers whose jobs are under threat. Not our communities. And, as this video shows, there are serious questions about safety too.

This isn't about progress. It's about corporate greed. They want to replace the very workers who build the business with machines to maximise profits while the government appears to roll out the red carpet.

We say NO to mass job losses.
NO to corporate greed.
NO to sacrificing our communities for endless profits.

Drivers must organise and fight for our future. If you are not part of the fight back, you are sitting back and letting this happen in front of your eyes

Listen to the Chair of the IWGB Private Hire Drivers Union, Nader Awaad, argue that if just 1.5% of drivers came together to unite “it would set the world on fire”.

Speaking at an organising day at Heathrow this week, he argued that just 5,000 drivers taking action would be enough to “change the course of history” by making London come to a standstill and force the government, politicians, Transport for London and Uber to change their exploitative ways. To make this a reality we need drivers like YOU to join us and build this movement together.

While we might not be there yet, we’ve already proved that when we unite, we win. Sustained IWGB pressure recently forced Sadiq Khan to begin to reckon with the devastation of TfL’s license renewal failures. While the road to justice for those impacted by the crisis still has a way to go, we know that only by coming together did we get this far.

IWGB member and private hire driver Julius Mugabo has been granted permission for a landmark legal case against Transport for London over their widespread failures to renew private hire driver licenses, which pushed almost 18,000 London drivers out of work.

It is only thanks to sustained protesting by IWGB drivers who united for justice, that this issue has been brought to national attention and will now be heard in the High Court. This is just the latest win in our ongoing campaign, which has also seen drivers secure from TfL short-term, emergency licenses, additional processing staff, an acknowledgement of failures, and an end to the licensing backlog.

We will continue to fight until we see permanent reform of TfL’s system and get back every penny drivers are owed
