Children First Kenya

Children First Kenya Children First works to promote easy access to education for children and advocate gender equality. Contact us today to find out how you can help.

We work in Kenya, where we engage with local communities and schools, and aim to put a stop to child marriages and FGM. Thank you for visiting our page and taking the time to find out about our work. Children First Kenya partner with local organisations in Kenya promoting education and helping protect children from abuse, especially girls in danger of child marriages and FGM. We firmly believe tha

t education is key to a brighter future not just for individuals but whole communities. In rural parts of the country with prevalent tribal conflicts the communities are deprived of the most basic needs, like access to schools and medical care; that is where we want to help. Working on the ground, we get to meet the communities, understand the culture and learn about the daily struggles women and children need to overcome in order to survive. Our current partners are St Luke's Primary School (East Pokot), St Philip's Primary School (West Pokot) and Imani Children's Home (Nairobi). We work 'hands on' on each project we undertake, supporting the needs on the ground. There are many ways to get involved, from financial support to volunteering your time in Kenya or the UK. Your assistance will make a massive and visible difference to the projects. We are a charity registered with Charity Commision in England (No. 1200726).

I have not posted in a while because it has been a roller coaster of events and emotions, and added packing and travelling has not helped. But watch this space - I have a lot of updates, just need to get some sleep and time to write them 😉
Thank you for your continued support. 🧡💚

Yesterday was Friday - a market day in Tangulbei. Usually very colourful and vibrant, this time there was something important missing.

If you look at the last photo, you will see lots of empty spaces. These are usually occupied by traders coming from our nearest town. The town which is not in Pokot. The town which is in territory of the tribe from which the bandits who took lives of two young people from Tangulbei come from.

The absence of those traders highlights several concerns, mainly ones being:

Insecurity is still there - people are still afraid to travel to our place; and likewise our people are stuck as there is no transport (apart from police lorry) to that town from fear of being attacked again.

Very limited access to fresh fruit and vegetables which normally come from that town - the traders are afraid to come here, therefore their places at the market are empty

Opportunities to earn a living for the local women are also reduced as they would work for the traders on the market. Now those jobs are not there.

It is hard to imagine living in these conditions when you have a job, a supermarket on each corner, your children are at school and you have a stable and comfortable home.

But here all those issues are restraining the community to progress and prosper. This is why I am so passionate about empowering people from this marginalised area. These are my people and whilst I don’t experience their hardship, I see it, understand it and emphasise with them. I hope you can help me to continue support for those who have so little yet they carry on with their daily struggles and still find energy to sing and dance.

It is not only children who come to us asking for help - today we visited a home of elderly couple whose house was no longer providing them with shelter against rain.
We mobilised few women from a nearby area who are helping to build a new home for these two lovely people.
It really was wonderful to see the joy on this grandfather’s face.

This is a real blessing even if the mud might be annoying when it’s time to walk to the shop 😉
Thanks to the regular rains this season Tangulbei is beautifully green and we are very hopeful for a good harvest. 🌽🌱🌳🫛

Never ending shopping lists to ensure the children and their families have the necessities: for school and food.
This is why your support is so crucial - to support those living below poverty line we need more people to get involved and help with regular donations. If you are able, please donate today. If you can, invite your FB friends to like our page, talk to others about our children and our work here. There are so many ways you can assist our children from where you are.
Asante Sana 💚🧡

Please keep Sheila Cherop and our people in your prayers - this is a very tough time for our community here in Tangulbei. Today we will be saying the final goodbye to our dear girl.
But first we must arrive safely home with her - the police are here to es**rt us. Praying all will go well and we can lay her to rest this afternoon. 💔💔💔

Our kids traveling today - and needing police es**rt to be able to reach the nearest town…
It is so sad when senseless killings cause so much fear, insecurity and instability for a community already dealing with so much hardship and challenges. And media reporting it really one-sidedly really makes everything so much worse and prevents the peace in the area

Part one of our trip today… fingers crossed 🤞🏼 it is less eventful this time 😉
