Still buzzing from yesterday’s event at City Hall.

What a way to round off 7 months of work on the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

At City Hall, our Design Innovators took to the stage for the Future Palace Showcase – sharing bold ideas, thoughtful solutions, and self-made prototypes that reimagine the future of this iconic space.

From trackside innovation and lighting concepts, to wayfinding, seating, and water systems – every idea came from young people shaping the spaces around them.

This is what it looks like when young voices are given a real platform.

Huge thank you to everyone involved in making it happen and our project partners and for commissioning the project.

Why create The Living Archive?

Because community work often disappears once the project ends.

Workshops happen.
Spaces are activated.
Ideas are shared.

But the lived experiences, learning and voices behind those moments are rarely captured.

The Living Archive exists to document those experiences — the people who shaped them, the collaborations that made them possible, and the creative processes behind the outcomes.

It’s an evolving collection of films that reflect how communities, young people and creative practitioners are helping shape cities, culture and public space.

And it will continue to grow.

Explore the archive and discover the stories behind the work.

Inside The Living Archive, our projects are organised around three themes that reflect how Beyond the Box approaches collaboration with communities.

Where Care Becomes Structure
Equity strategy and social value work within regeneration and development.

Growing Voices
Programmes that support young people and communities to share insight, creativity and leadership.

Making Place Together
Cultural placemaking initiatives that transform public space through art, architecture and collective creativity.

Together these projects document how communities, culture and creativity shape the places we live.

Looking back at our collaboration on Lund Point, the V&A Museum and artist Brendan Barry.

In the summer of 2021, our young cultural producers worked with artist Brendan Barry and the V&A Museum to transform four empty dwellings in a 23-storey high camera obscura on the Carpenters Estate in East London.

Rooms inside the vacant flats were converted into multi-lens camera obscura and analogue photographic darkrooms, where together we created ultra-large format analogue photographic prints capturing a unique perspective of the landscape around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The images documented a moment of transition — as East Bank was beginning to emerge and the V&A East Storehouse and V&A East Museum prepared to open nearby.

This work reframed the site through the lived experiences of people in East London, exploring photography as an act of cultural democracy and community storytelling.

The exhibition first opened at The People’s Pavilion 2021 during the 10-day Envision East festival, before travelling to the V&A Museum in South Kensington as part of London Design Festival, where it was displayed on the architectural landing.

“This project is unique because unlike a lot of things commissioned by cultural spaces, it actively engaged with the voices of the community that it situated itself in… The project allowed young East Londoners to ‘take up space’.”
— Condie Baiden, Lead Young Cultural Producer

Excited to see the V&A East Museum open later this year, continuing this evolving cultural story in East London.

Looking back at our work with the then Museum of London, soon to reopen as the London Museum later this year.

A once-in-a-generation transformation is underway, breathing new life into two historic buildings in the City of London. Opening early and closing late, the new museum reflects London as a true 24-hour global city.

We were commissioned to support the project “Our Time”, designing and facilitating creative engagement workshops that helped shape the concept design during RIBA Stage 2, in collaboration with Asif Khan Architects and the museum’s curatorial, partnership, audience and interpretation teams.

Through our signature creative engagement approach, we worked with an inspiring group of creative partners including Duckie, Gal-Dem, Islington Play Association, Nutkhut, and Diverse City.

Together we explored themes such as collections, performance, media, and the role of future audiences in shaping a museum for London.

Alongside this, we designed a Future Audience Workshop Series, engaging two groups identified as the least represented in museum audiences — people aged 16–25 and 55+. Across three sessions, participants shared their aspirations, needs and ideas for what the next London museum should be.

The outcomes directly informed the developing concept design of the “Our Time” space and helped centre diverse voices in the vision for the new museum.

We’re excited to see the next chapter unfold as the London Museum opens towards the end of 2026.

Since The Lounge opened 8 weeks ago in Southmere, Thamesmead, our Youth Makers have been designing and delivering sessions for their peers while building real-world skills along the way.

After co-designing the space, they have been learning skills in event planning, creating marketing and branding guidelines, managing social media accounts, and shaping The Lounge into a space where youth, culture, and community can connect.

We’re proud to celebrate their achievements — and the fact that over 100 young people have connected with The Lounge since opening.

There are still plenty more activities taking place throughout March, so stay connected and check them out over at .

The Festival of the Futures 2025 Zine is now LIVE ✨

This time last year, we welcomed over 2,000 young people to the inaugural Festival of the Future at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) — bringing together partners across the built environment who believe young people deserve access to the industries shaping our world.

Today, we’re proud to share the Festival of the Futures 2025 Zine — designed by Sana Tabassum .scale and generously sponsored by .

This curated guide spotlights the organisations, pathways and programmes supporting young people into architecture, design, construction and the wider built environment — turning the energy of the festival into a lasting resource for schools, families and future city-makers.

As we look ahead to Festival of the Futures 2026 this autumn, we’re inviting sponsors and partners who believe in widening access and investing in the next generation.

Meet our 10 Design Innovators making moves 💫

Since November last year, our Design Innovators have been working behind the scenes on the Future Place Programme, tackling real challenges at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre through bold, creative design thinking in collaboration with and partners.

This year, things get hands-on. 🔧+🔨

They’ll be prototyping their ideas and testing them with centre users, turning concepts into practical solutions that could shape the future of the space.

Watch this space — exciting things are coming. 👀
