We continue our band bios this week, introducing Penelope, one of our Saxophone players.

With so many volunteering roles and her passion for music, her story, and photos, are truly wonderful.

We particularly love the cute lemur but also impressed with the Italian Fencing gold medal from 2012 too. Read more below.

‘My Reflection on Volunteering

Volunteering is a way for me to experience life from many different perspectives. Over the years, I have been fortunate to have several opportunities to volunteer, each leading to entirely different environments and experiences.

My journey with it began on a large scale at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Working as a Games Maker meant being part of a unique global event, where the energy of the crowds and the determination of the athletes offered a clear picture of what people can achieve when they come together.

As a volunteer zookeeper, over a two year period, I had the rare chance to assist with wildlife conservation, from feeding tigers to caring for fruit bats and lemurs. This hands-on work provided a completely different, practical understanding of nature.

After that role, it I volunteered locally in a junior school, working in the classroom allowed me to support young children as they learned to navigate new ideas, offering steady encouragement during their early school years.

I also volunteered for four years in a visitors education centre, where I curated art exhibitions for local artists to display their works.

Lately, my time is focused on music.

I got my sax 29 years ago and started to learn but family and career meant it soon got put to one side. I took it out of the cupboard about three years ago and got a tutor…

Now, every week, I meet up for rehearsals with the Saint Francis Hospice Concert Band. Preparing for our upcoming concerts brings its own set of demands, particularly the challenge of learning and mastering a constantly changing selection of new musical pieces.

Playing the alto saxophone alongside other musicians in this group is a completely different experience for me but one that has me hooked, not least for the sheer achievement but raising valuable funds for such an amazing organisation.

Whether working at a global sports event, caring for animals, or tackling a difficult new score during a weekly rehearsal, every single one of these experiences has left me with an immense sense of gratitude—and above all, they have all made me smile.’

Have you ever considered volunteering, or do you have a favourite memory from giving your time to a cause? We would love to hear your experiences—drop your stories in the comments below! 👇

There's been a LOT of talk about The Traitors lately... so we thought we'd ask….

Our charity concert is bringing people together for a brilliant night of live music, and every ticket helps support a great cause.

Tag your fellow Faithfuls, share this with your Traitor friends and come join us!

And our conductor for rehearsal this week is….(drum roll)….. John Seabrook!

Yes, our head of woodwind is gearing up to stand in for Paul this week as he heads off to a destination wedding in Vegas. How exciting!

As well as being a superb flautist and our head of woodwind, John works as a professional musician and a motorcycle instructor.

In his spare time, he loves to ride his bike with his wife and fellow youtubers, throughout the UK and Europe. We couldn’t resist adding a few photos.

You can see more of his adventures on his YouTube channel ‘Seabreeze Rider’.

But don’t forget to keep following us here and sharing with friends as we are regularly introducing our band members and have so many more interesting stories yet to come!

Who knew we had such a diverse range of professions and hobbies between us?!!

Do you have any motorcycling stories to tell? We’d love to hear them, comment below!

Time for another band social!

Yesterday, a few of our members took a trip into London to watch the Band of the Irish Guards perform at the prestigious Regent Hall.

It was a fantastic performance and an amazing venue to hear them play.

We are very excited to have the honour of playing there ourselves in February, so it was a great opportunity to see a concert there beforehand.

We think you’ll agree the band sound amazing and they’ve certainly given us inspiration to continue working hard towards our next performance.

Motivation button firmly switched on!

Meet Claire, our horseriding Clarinettist!

Claire has kindly put together, not only a written bio but also a video for us to share with you, so you can meet her lovely horse too!

Hit play or read below to learn a bit more about Claire’s career with her much loved horses, including Syrup, and why she was keen to join the hospice band.

‘I have one of the more unusual occupations amongst the band; I am a dressage trainer. I spend my time outside training horses and their owners on how to improve their dressage and progress through the levels.

I have done a fair bit of competing with my own horses, having won 2 National Titles, a handful of regional titles and various other events. My clarinet teacher always used to say that if I spent as much time practising my clarinet as I did playing with horses, I might actually be quite good!

My musical journey very nearly finished before it started! In our final year of primary school we were all asked if we would like to play an instrument. I was really keen to learn to play the clarinet and so signed up for that. Unfortunately the peripatetic clarinet teacher didn’t have the same enthusiasm to take me on as a pupil as I had to sign up.

I was born with a cleft lip and had a surgical repair at 10 weeks old. The clarinet teacher refused me a place on the clarinet lessons, stating that with a cleft lip I would never be able to play and there were plenty of children who wanted to play who didn’t have a cleft so they should be given the spot.

Fortunately my mum wasn’t one to give up easily and felt I at least deserved a chance to see if I could manage to play. There was no swaying the school teacher, so mum went to our local music shop and asked for a list of instructors. From there she found someone willing to take a chance on me and give me some lessons. I loved my lessons, which I continued throughout the time I was at school, gradually playing more difficult pieces. I played in the school orchestra at both my primary school, secondary school and the school where I completed my A levels.

After I left school and went to university, I gradually played less. Now no longer part of an orchestra and no longer having lessons, I lost the drive to practise without a new goal. For many years I have been keen to start playing again, so when I saw the advert on Saint Francis Hospice page advertising the formation of the band and looking for players, I jumped at the chance. It was a daunting beginning, when I came along to my first rehearsal and everyone was playing beautifully and, at this point, I was struggling to remember how to read the music, never mind play anything! However it has all come back to me, quicker than I thought it would, and I am loving being part of such a supportive group of people, who are raising money for a vitally under funded community resource.

Both my mother and grandmother worked at Old Church Hospital (the precursor to Queens) and had patients who accessed the services the hospice provided, so it is a privilege for me to now be able to help raise money for the hospice.’

We all think Syrup was wonderful company for Claire in the video, what do you think?

Doesn't he look pleased to be back?

And we were pleased to see him too!

Tanned and raring to go, Paul put the band through their paces with renewed energy!

With a new sax quintet piece, most members had slightly longer to linger over their well earned break-time cuppa whilst the saxes had a run through.

For those of you sax lovers, we hope to share this feature at the concert.

Which sax is your favourite?
