Every accessible entrance, toilet, parking bay, and ramp in this country exists because someone had to fight for it. Then someone else quietly stopped checking whether it still worked.

Compliance is a box ticked once. Access is a decision made every day, including the days nobody’s watching.

The assistance is free. The useful bit isn’t.

Airport special assistance is a legal right and it costs nothing,
and plenty of blind people fly solo on it every day. What it can’t
do is read you a gate change while you’re in the loo queue, or find
24B, or tell you the café moved. The person who can do all that
needs a seat and a bed, at full price.

National Accessible Air Travel Day is a good day to notice which
half got funded.

We don’t book holidays. But the missing thing on a flight to Lisbon
is the missing thing on a Tuesday in Hackney, and that one we can
actually staff.

The 9.30 rule is going.

For years a disabled bus pass in England was only free from 9.30am
on weekdays, which quietly ruled out any job, class or appointment
that started before then. The government announced yesterday that
the time restriction comes off from April, funded at £60m, all day,
every day.

London’s Freedom Pass already covered buses round the clock, so this
one is mostly for everywhere else in England. Londoners still hit
9.30 on National Rail.

Erik at put it better than we could: he is visually impaired
before 9.30 as well.

So the fare is sorted. The bit that isn’t: standing at a stop with
three buses pulling in and no way to tell which one is the 43.
That has never been a funding problem. It’s a someone-standing-there
problem, and it takes two hours on a Saturday.

One of these is cake. It’s the envelope. It’s always the envelope.

A policy paper landed this week proposing £20bn off disability
benefits, with PIP replaced by a payment aimed only at people
described as gravely ill. It’s a proposal from an opposition party,
not law, and it’s worth reading properly rather than through a
screenshot.

Here is what a paper like that cannot touch. Moh still wants the
gym on Thursday. Priya still wants the shops. Those journeys don’t
run on a benefits system, they run on somebody with a free arm and
two hours.

That part is entirely within reach, and it’s us.

How would you describe the Gherkin to someone who can’t see it?

Most people arrive at “well, a gherkin”, which is the correct answer. Shape, in the hand, beats adjectives every time.

The Cheesegrater is the good one. It slopes because there’s a protected sightline to St Paul’s running through the City and 122 Leadenhall had to lean out of the way of it. A building shaped by a view. And the shape is the part you can hand over.

None of this needs training. On a guided walk you describe what’s around you, and London has already done most of the work by naming its buildings after objects in your cupboard.
