Tribute to Kanya King CBE (1969–2026)

Today, we honour the life and legacy of Kanya King CBE, a visionary leader, cultural pioneer, and champion of Black excellence.

As the founder of the MOBO Awards, Kanya transformed the landscape of British music and culture, creating a platform that celebrated, amplified, and legitimised Black talent at a time when many voices were overlooked. Through her courage, determination, and unwavering belief in representation, she opened doors for countless artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs around the world.

Kanya’s impact extended far beyond music. She inspired generations to dream bigger, break barriers, and create opportunities where none existed. Her journey was a testament to resilience, vision, and purpose.

GUBA was privileged to recognise and celebrate Kanya as one of our distinguished award recipients. Her contribution to culture, diversity, and global Black achievement will forever remain part of the legacy we honour.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, colleagues, and the entire MOBO community during this difficult time.

Thank you, Kanya, for your extraordinary contribution to our world. Your voice, vision, and legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

Rest in Power, Kanya King CBE.

In 2022, brought the CEO of the Grammys to Ghana connecting him directly with our creative industry leaders. One key conversation stood out: how do Africans win more Grammys?

The answer is clear. For more African wins, we need more Africans at the table. That starts with our people becoming Recording Academy members. Representation matters. Access matters. The future is African

Looking back at moments that made history.

From our perspective as the GUBA team, Barbados was unforgettable. We witnessed visionaries, changemakers, and our extended diaspora family come together to celebrate African excellence. Every handshake, every story, every smile reminded us why we do this work — to honor heritage, empower communities, and uplift voices across the globe.

The downsides, the upsides, and everything in between — we experienced it all, and it only made the moments of connection and celebration even more meaningful.

Being part of this edition, we didn’t just observe history — we helped create it. The Barbados GUBA Awards was more than an event; it was a milestone in celebrating heritage, connecting communities, and shaping the narrative of African excellence for generations to come.

Yesterday, GUBA leadership travelled to Kumasi for a historic Akukudeɛ, to formally express gratitude to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his extraordinary support of the GUBA Awards in Barbados.

His Majesty’s presence and endorsement marked a defining moment over 400 years later reaffirming the deep, unbroken bond between Africa and its global Diaspora.

This moment reflects GUBA’s continued commitment to honouring heritage, strengthening global African unity, and building meaningful bridges between traditional authority, international leadership, and diaspora excellence.

Legacy. Unity. Global Africa. 👑🌍

Thank you

GUBA Honoree Dorothea Amanda Hodge Awarded CBE

Honoured in the 2025 New Year’s Honours for outstanding parliamentary and political service, Dorothea Amanda Hodge has spent decades transforming communities and empowering change-makers globally.

From supporting women entrepreneurs across 44 African countries, to championing environmental justice in the Niger Delta and post-Hurricane Irma recovery in Anguilla, her leadership demonstrates that representation alone isn’t enough — shifting who is heard and resourced is key.

Twenty years ago, Hodge served as the only Afro-Caribbean Special Adviser in Tony Blair’s government, proving that policy change requires action, insight, and courage. Today, through Aequitas Global, she ensures marginalized voices lead decision-making processes, driving systemic change across continents.

This CBE recognition is not just hers — it belongs to every changemaker, community organiser, and team member contributing to sustainable impact. And while milestones like this are celebrated, the mission continues: by 2030, 622 million people may still live in poverty, making the work more urgent than ever.
