Omo, who is living with HIV, shares why testing matters for Black people who have moved to the UK.

Knowing your status means you can take control of your health. If you test positive, treatment and support are available — including free treatment and peer support from people who understand how you may be feeling.

Testing is quick, free and confidential across London.

“Testing in the community is really important to break the stigma around HIV.” — Piers Johnson, Senior Commissioning Officer of London’s HIV Prevention Programme

Piers joined us at a Skin Like Mine testing event at Deptford Lounge where we offered HIV testing along with general health checks with the Lewisham Primary Care Network, making it easier for Black Londoners to talk to health professionals and get the check-ups they need.

Spaces like this gives Black Londoners the chance to get the facts about HIV and feel more confident about testing.

Black Londoners, we are changemakers, leaders, artists, athletes, trendsetters, and healers; we don’t just shape culture, we are the culture.

When we set our minds to something, we achieve our goals. We’re tenacious, curious, and ambitious, whether it’s in our careers or our personal lives.

These qualities don’t go away when we start talking about sexual health. So, let’s do what we do best: flip the script from blame and shame, to self-care and celebration.

Because Skin Like Mine walks in power, dances on beat, and tests for HIV.

Meet Memory Sachikonye.

Mum. Grandmother. Proud member of her community. Living well with HIV.

Memory is generously sharing with Skin Like Mine what living with HIV really looks like today – and advocating for everyone to test to know your status.

Testing is quick, confidential, and it puts you in control.

Too many people in Black communities are still diagnosed late. Not because we don’t care, but because stigma and lack of clear information get in the way.

We have to take charge of our health – and testing for HIV is part of that.

This Tuesday, One Voice Network and National AIDS Trust formally launched our latest report “Understanding the challenges of Black people living with HIV accessing primary care” as part of our joint project.

We showcased the findings of our report which highlighted the pervasive issues of stigma, confidentiality, and confidence in primary care to support the multiple, complex needs of Black people living with in London.

Thank you to our keynote speaker and panellists Professor Jane Anderson (Co-Chair of ), Oluwakemi Agunbiade (Sr Policy and Research Officer ), Rebecca (Co-Director ), and Christina Ganotakis (Co-Chair OVN / Policy and Insights Manager ), and to all who attended for their engagement and support.

Finally, we thank all the member organisations of One Voice Network and the respondents to our survey for without whom we could not develop this rich body of evidence and our recommendations to decisionmakers along the healthcare continuum.

We believe that this report and the work we do will not only guide equitable change for the future, but for Black African and Caribbean communities living with and affected by HIV today.
